Warning: contains a preview of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Dog of War #1!A preview for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s “lost episode” teases the most adorable Borg in Star Trek history. "Cute" may be the last word anyone would use to describe the Borg, but in IDW’s forthcoming Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Dog of War miniseries, Quark is looking to buy a rare purebred corgi from Earth - but there may be more sinister to this pup than meets the eye: it has Borg components!

In a recent tweet, IDW Publishing released a four-page preview for the first issue, which is written by Mike Chen and drawn by Nick Filardi. The issue opens in the final days of the Dominion War; Sisko and his crew have just retaken the station and the Romulans have joined the war effort. While working to salvage any Cardassian technology they can, Sisko notices something curious: the sensors are showing some sort of Borg technology in Holosuite Four; Sisko and Odo take off to investigate. Sisko forces Quark to open the Holosuite, and inside they find sentient holographic lounge singer Vic Fontaine surrounded by a bevy of dogs - including the corgi that lays at the center of the book’s plot.

Of all the malevolent races in the Star Trek universe, none strike fear into the hearts of the Federation more than the Borg. Hailing from the distant Delta Quadrant, the Borg have one goal: to assimilate all organic life into their collective, making them Borg as well. Some of Star Trek’s most noteworthy episodes and films have revolved around the Borg - for example, 'The Best of Both Worlds,' a two-part episode that saw Captain Jean-Luc Picard assimilated into the Borg, where he was then forced to lead an attack on Starfleet at Wolf 359. Among those who fought at Wolf 359 was Captain Benjamin Sisko, whose wife perished in the conflict. The Borg are the number one enemy of the Federation, and the mere mention of their name is enough to inspire fear.

This Adorable Borg Is Still a Huge Threat

Yet now, somehow, the franchise has seemingly introduced its more adorable Borg yet - a corgi who has found itself caught up in a mix of intergalactic intrigue. The corgi is missing Borg implants on the outside (though they are shown in Jake Bartok's variant cover for issue 2), meaning it has not been assimilated, so why is it pinging as having Borg components? Star Trek: Picard’s first season revealed an extensive black market for Borg technology - could someone be smuggling some to Deep Space Nine inside a corgi? This is a ghastly proposition, but this seems to be the only answer to Sisko’s dilemma. Regardless, Borg technology is dangerous, and in the wrong hands, there is no end of destruction that can happen. The corgi may be cute, but it's also highly dangerous.

The Dog of War is a celebration of 30 years of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. The show’s first episode, 'The Emissary,' opened with Sisko fighting the Borg at the Battle of Wolf 359. Focusing the plot of The Dog of War around the Borg brings everything full circle. The Borg represent the largest threat to the Star Trek universe, but now fans are set to meet the most adorable member of the collective yet.
