Recently shared Star Trek: Discovery images confirm the start of filming for season 5. The science-fiction series premiered in 2017 as the first Star Trek show since Star Trek: Enterprise was cancelled over a decade prior. Taking inspiration from the popular J.J. Abrams 2009 reboot film, both Alex Kurtzman and Bryan Fuller were tasked with rebranding the long-running franchise for a new audience. Star Trek: Discovery follows Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) as she leads the crew of the USS Discovery on adventures through space and time.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 found the known galaxy threatened by a mysterious phenomena known as the Dark Matter Anomaly (DMA). The massive, intelligently designed object traversed through multiple star systems, destroying anything and everything in its path, including Kwejian, the home world of Burnham's love interest Cleveland Booker (David Ajala). Season 4 concluded with the crew of the Discovery successfully contacting the DMA's distant alien creators, Species 10-C, and getting them to deactivate the advanced device after a prolonged and complicated attempt at communication. Star Trek: Discovery was renewed for an additional season in January, however, no story details of the upcoming episodes have been revealed.

Unfortunately, not much is revealed within the photographs pertaining to the story of Discovery season 5. So far, details of the upcoming narrative have been kept tightly under wraps. The images simply celebrate the start of Paradise and her team's next journey on the popular Star Trek series. However, series director and producer Olatunde Osunsanmi recently teased that the upcoming season will honor the older version of Star Trek that many longtime fans grew up with. Season 5 will reportedly feature 10 episodes and is slated for release sometime in 2023.

With the 10-C's DMA story arc concluded, the choices for the direction of the series' following season are vast. However, since the USS Discovery's jump 900 years into the future, the crew's mission has been relatively reactive in nature. When they arrived in season 3, Burnham found herself separated from her ship while her crew searched for her, relocated the Federation, and logically investigated the nature of the Burn, an event that fractured alliances throughout the galaxy. Season 4 saw the crew of Discovery react to another threat when the DMA tore through star systems. With season 5 kicking off with a relatively clean slate for the crew, perhaps their next mission can be one of exploration, like both the Star Trek shows of old and the new Strange New Worlds show. With the Federation breaking the boundaries of their galaxy for the first time and making first contact with an alien civilization far more advanced, the possibilities are endless when Star Trek: Discovery returns for season 5 in 2023.
