A first look image from Star Trek: Discovery season 5 promises intense action. Premiering in 2017, Discovery was the first new show in the long-running science-fiction franchise since Star Trek: Enterprise was canceled over a decade prior. Co-created by Alex Kurtzman, one of the writers for the popular 2009 J.J. Abrams Star Trek reboot film, Discovery follows Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the titular spaceship as they embark on adventures across space and time.

After jumping to the 32nd Century and helping to reestablish Starfleet's presence in the galaxy following the cataclysmic "Burn", season 4 found Captain Burnham and her crew investigating a mysterious planet-destroying phenomenon known as the Dark Matter Anomaly (DMA). After tracking down the origin of the DMA to an unknown region outside the known galaxy, the crew of the USS Discovery successfully contacted its alien creators, Species 10-C, and convinced them to deactivate the device. With no major narratives carrying over into Star Trek: Discovery season 5, Martin-Green previously teased that there will be unexpected moments.

With the Discovery's Captain Burnham dressed for arid desert conditions, it is likely that she was part of a landing party on the mysterious world with intentions to stay for an extended period of time. Although it is unclear if the debris behind Captain Burnham is from an explosion or from an incoming sandstorm, the danger is clearly evident in the captain's expression as she races away in hope of safety. With little information revealed regarding the story in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, fans can only speculate as to what the new season will entail.

Due to the catastrophic nature of 10-C's DMA, Discovery season 5 may deal in part with the aftermath of the tragedy, as well as the first contact with an extragalactic species. Perhaps the upcoming season will involve the fallout regarding the knowledge that a species with the ability to decimate their galaxy at a moment's notice exists just beyond the boundaries of the galaxy. Although there is peace between Starfleet and the 10-C, some may give in to their fear and attempt to act against the threat. However, each new season of the popular series has yet to retread old stories and has instead surprised audiences with something new and unexpected. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will likely be no different.
