What We Know About Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

Michael Burnham looks on in Star Trek Discovery

The ending of Star Trek: Discovery season 4 created a bright path to season 5. Filming on the new episodes of Star Trek: Discovery started in early June and has now concluded just five months later. Production partially took place on Pixomondo’s Toronto AR Wall stage. The fifth season was given a shorter episode order compromising of ten episodes, which is a drop from the previous range of 13-15 episodes a season. The move brings the show to the same episode count as other recent series from the Trek universe, such as Star Trek: Prodigy, Star Trek: Picard and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 will take the show in a new direction. Instead of continuing the streak of stopping galaxy-ending events, Captain Michael Burnham and the crew of the USS Discovery will be on the lookout for the greatest treasure in the known galaxy. This new objective should provide the show with a much-needed breath of fresh air. The past two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery have felt confined at times, with most of the action being displayed inside of starships and the Federation headquarters. The Star Trek franchise's focus on exploration and, as the title of the show reflects, discovery of new worlds is the aspect that sets it apart from other sci-fi properties. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 bringing the show back to the franchise's roots can only benefit the series.

After stopping the DMA threat at the end of season 4, the Star Trek: Discovery crew has a clear path to this new tonal shift of the show. There might even be romance in Star Trek: Discovery season 5. Having built a reputation as the most serious and gritty entry of the new Star Trek shows, the series now can focus on world-building, with different and exciting new worlds popping up during the crew's search for this new treasure throughout the universe. Captain Burnham and her crew will likely meet a number of foes along the way, as the greatest treasure in the known galaxy is surely being sought by other parties. This set-up positions Star Trek: Discovery for an exciting season 5, one that's action-packed and should provide the visual spectacle fans have come to expect from the franchise as the Discovery crew embarks on this universe-wide hunt. Star Trek: Discovery will look like a very different show when it returns for season 5 in 2023.
