The cast of Star Trek: Discovery continues to expand. While there are no shortage of Star Trek movies, the stories of the United Federation of Planets have mostly been told on TV. Five live action series and one animated series have all been a part of the Star Trek franchise. In fact, between 1987 and 2005 there was always at least one Star Trek series airing new episodes. This means that the newest series - Star Trek: Discovery - has a lot to live up to.
The new series - which takes place 10 years before the events of the original - is doing a few things differently than the previous shows to keep things fresh and interesting. It is the first Star Trek series where the main character is not the Captain, but First Officer Michael Burnham - played by Sonequa Martin-Green from The Walking Dead. The cast also includes Jason Isaacs, Anthony Rapp, Michelle Yeoh, and Doug Bradley. Every Star Trek show is an ensemble, and the cast continues to grow, introducing more characters to the story.
According to CBR, a couple more actors have been added to the roster. And a third one who was already a member of the cast has changed to a different role than was previously announced.
Playing Security Officer Commander Landry is Rekha Sharma, best known as Tory on Battlestar Galactica. Sharma certainly has a lot of experience playing roles in science fiction. She was seen in the movies The Core and Alien vs. Predator: Requiem and on the TV shows V and The 100. Joining the cast of Star Trek: Discovery should be a familiar experience for her.
It was previously announced that Shazad Latif would play the role of Klingon Commander Kol. Now it has been announced that he will be a Starfleet Officer - Lt. Tyler. Latif previously played Dr. Henry Jekyll in the final season of Penny Dreadful. This role change means he has gone from playing an enemy to an ally - the Klingons were originally villains when introduced to Star Trek, but they later made peace with the Federation.
The role of Commander Kol has not been left open however. He will be played by Kenneth Mitchell. Mitchell is quite the TV veteran, with leading or recurring roles on Frequency, Jericho, The Astronaut Wives Club, and several others. Commander Kol is partnered with Klingon leaders Dennas and Ujilli, played by Claire McConnell and Damon Runyan.
As the all-star cast continues to grown, anticipation for Star Trek: Discovery grows right along with it. With the premiere date still in question, news like this feels like another step towards the show reaching our screens.
Star Trek: Discovery is rumored to premiere in the fall of 2017. Screen Rant will keep you updated with changes as they develop.
