Star Trek: Discovery has made its debut on CBS, with the rest of the season airing on CBS All-Access throughout 2017 and into 2018. The first new Star Trek TV series since 2005 (Star Trek: Enterprise), Discovery has been highly anticipated by fans, and despite the paywall causing some controversy, reaction to the first couple of episodes seems positive. Star Trek: Discovery brings with it a brand new cast. Here's the lowdown on who's who:

Jason Isaacs is Gabriel Lorca: Captain of the Discovery and described as a "brilliant military tactician." Isaacs says that his character has more issues than any of the past Star Trek captains.

Sonequa Martin-Green is Michael Burnham: First officer of USS Shenzhou, she was raised as Vulcan and became the first human to attend the Vulcan Learning Center and Vulcan Science Academy.

Doug Jones is Saru: Saru serves as a Lieutenant aboard the Discovery. He is a Kelpien, a new species created for Star Trek: Discovery. Used to being hunted, his species have evolved to sense when death is coming.

Shazad Latif is Ash Tyler: Latif says his character is "complex and deep," and as a former Prisoner of War, it seems likely that we can expect some issues. The character is now a Starfleet Lieutenant.

Anthony Rapp is Paul Stamets: A science officer who specializes in the study of fungi in space. Paul Stamets is the first openly gay character in a Star Trek TV series. Over the course of the series, we'll get to see more of his relationship with Hugh Culber.

Mary Wiseman is Sylvia Tilly: A cadet working on Discovery, Tilly works under Stamets and becomes roommates with Michael Burnham.
