Warning: contains a preview of Star Trek: Prelude to Day of Blood!Soon, Star Trek will explore the fallout from its biggest, most epic conflict: the Dominion War. Seen in the final seasons of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the Dominion War is one of the most important events in the franchise, yet little of the war’s fallout has been explored - but that is set to change. This summer, IDW will release the first ever Star Trek comic crossover event, titled Day of Blood, and the publisher has stated it will examine the ramifications of the Dominion War.

Introduced in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine’s second season, the Dominion hails from the distant Gamma Quadrant. Ruled over by the shape-shifting Founders, and using the brutal Jem Hadar as stormtroopers, the Dominion ruled the Gamma Quadrant with an iron fist. After first contact with the Federation, war became inevitable and many episodes of Deep Space Nine showed the run-up to the conflict. Eventually, the war grew to encompass not only the Federation and the Dominion, but also the Klingons, the Romulans, the Cardassians and the Breen, among others. The war came to a conclusion in Deep Space Nine's final episode, but other Star Trek shows, such as Voyager, Picard and Lower Decks, have rarely touched on the war’s aftermath. That is set to change in the franchise’s first comic book crossover.

An article on StarTrek.com reveals more information about the forthcoming crossover, including a first look at preview art, shared below. Day of Blood spins out of the god-war currently raging in the pages of IDW’s new flagship title, simply called Star Trek. In addition, the publisher is set to release Star Trek: Defiant, which will look at the god-war from the “ground” perspective, and together these two books will cross over in Day of Blood. The crossover will be written by Star Trek writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and Defiant writer Christopher Cantwell, with art by Mike Feehan. While the god-war will be front and center in the crossover, Lanzing says:

It's time for Benjamin Sisko to face the past, and for readers to finally get a look at the true fallout of the Dominion War. Deep Space Nine is the inspiration for this entire line, so it feels only right that the crew of the U.S.S. Theseus come back to where it all started.

The Dominion War's Fallout Is a Huge Star Trek Question

The Dominion War remains a touchstone in the Star Trek universe - a massive war that took the Federation and its allies down to the wire - yet the television shows have done little in the way of exploring what have to be gargantuan consequences. The war saw the end of the Cardassian Empire, but what happened afterwards? Did they rebuild? Was Odo successful in showing the Founders the errors of their ways? Is the Dominion even still in existence? Deep Space Nine’s final episode left many lingering questions - questions it seems Day of Blood will answer, beginning with the Free Comic Book Day issue Star Trek: Prelude to Day of Blood.

While the shows have been reluctant to discuss the war’s fallout, there are signs this is changing. Star Trek: Picard’s final season has promised legacy characters from Deep Space Nine will appear, and rumors are swirling that the season will look at some of the ramifications of the Dominion War. The War was one of the defining moments in the Star Trek universe, and now, at long last, fans will see what happened next.
