Paramount Pictures didn't bring one of its biggest 2016 movies to CinemaCon earlier this year, opting instead to let that particular feature get its own time to shine. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Star Trek with a new movie this summer and a new television series in development for air in January 2017, fans and media are gathered tonight at the Paramount lot in Los Angeles for a special presentation for Star Trek Beyond and the reveal of a brand new trailer.
The presentation began with Star Trek Beyond director Justin Lin and producer/prior director J.J. Abrams talking about the fans and sharing the happy news that Paramount and CBS are dropping their highly publicized lawsuit against the fan-made and fan-funded Axanar project, and followed that friendly news with the announcement that Star Trek Beyond's world premiere will be at San Diego Comic-Con 2016.
The Star Trey Beyond premiere event will be an outdoor IMAX experience on July 20, 2016 at Embarcadero Marina Park and everyone in attendance to tonight's Star Trek event (i.e. not us) gets a free pass. That's only two days before wide release so whether or not media screenings and a review embargo will take place before that remains to be seen.
This is the first-ever outdoor IMAX premiere event and it'll be bolstered by concert performance by the San Diego symphony orchestra composed by Michael Giacchino. Beyond director Justin Lin:
"I am thrilled to celebrate the premiere of the film together with the fans at Comic-Con and excited for everyone there to experience Michael Giacchino’s incredible score played live."
David Glanzer, spokesperson for Comic-Con International:
"We are both privileged and excited that Paramount Pictures, Skydance, and Bad Robot have chosen to honor fans by having the world premiere of the next chapter of Star Trek at Comic-Con this summer."
Star Trek Beyond, the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew. In Beyond, the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.
