Earlier this summer, Star Trek fans rejoiced as the third installment in Paramount Pictures' rebooted film series hit theaters. Star Trek Beyond follows Kirk, Spock, and their crew as they attempt to escape a foreign planet and maniacal dictator Krall. This film was an emotional one for fans and creators alike, since it features the franchise's first gay character and now lives on as young actor Anton Yelchin's final Star Trek film before his untimely death.
Though Beyond received favorable reviews, it was only a modest box office success at best despite arriving in time to mark Star Trek's 50th anniversary - most likely due to its poorly-timed theatrical release, in-between films like Jason Bourne and Ghostbusters. For fans who felt as though the movie did their beloved franchise justice, though, modest box office numbers do not at all a failure make. Followers of the legendary series are already on the edges of their seats, waiting for this latest film to hit DVD in November.
Until then, though, we're happy to report on some great Beyond poster art by Matt Ferguson, who regularly works on concept and poster art for Marvel Studios. The talented designer has released three new posters for Star Trek Beyond online through Twitter, accompanied by the message "I got to make this poster for Star Trek Beyond. One of my favourite films of the year." You can check out hi-res versions of the art, below:
The posters feature the alien scavenger Jaylah, who is integral in the team's plot to defeat Krall. The iconic Enterprise blends in beautifully with her facial markings, and three shadowed human figures -- Kirk, Spock, and Chekov? -- emanate from beams in the poster's foreground. The poster comes in three variations: blue, red, and yellow, in a tribute to Star Fleet's iconic colors.
You may recognize artist Matt Ferguson's style from his work on such films as Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America: Civil War. The artist has been hired to work on multiple production and marketing projects for Marvel Studios, from posters to DVD insert art. Ferguson is a fan of all things sci-fi, and he regularly produces killer art for favorite works like Stranger Things and Star Wars: The Force Awakens, just because. You can check out more of his work at his awesome website, HERE.
One fan of Ferguson's work asked how they might grab a copy of these breathtaking posters, to which the artist replied with an allusion to Thought Bubble, a UK comic arts festival coming up next month. For those of us in different countries, there's always the artist's online store. It now looks like Trekkies have two things to look forward to in the coming months--getting our hands on work like this, and the special edition featurettes that will come with Beyond's imminent DVDs.
Star Trek Beyond comes to DVD and Blu-ray on November 1st, 2016.
