Star Trek 4 Sets Legion Creator Noah Hawley as Writer & Director

Paramount may finally be moving forward with Star Trek 4, with Legion's Noah Hawley in talks to write and direct the next franchise installment.

Paramount has found a new "captain" for Star Trek 4 with Legion's Noah Hawley set to write and direct the next installment in the franchise. Under the guidance of J.J. Abrams, Paramount relaunched the Star Trek movie franchise in 2009. The movie introduced audiences to a brand new cast playing familiar characters, led by Chris Pine's Captain Kirk. The first film was a moderate box office hit and generated two sequels.

But, after Star Trek Beyond disappointed at the box office in 2017, the prospects of Star Trek 4 were put in doubt. Discussions for Chris Hemsworth to return as Kirk's father happened, but it appeared that the movie reached an impasse over salaries. At one time, S.J. Clarkson was set to direct the movie too. More recently though, it has been the possibility of Quentin Tarantino directing the next installment that has gained attention.

Now, Deadline is reporting that Noah Hawley is in final talks to write and direct the next Star Trek movie, which they believe will be Star Trek 4. Hawley is best known for creating TV shows like Legion and Fargo. There are no details at the time on when the movie will begin production or when Star Trek 4 will hit theaters.

This early on, details on Star Trek 4 are slim, especially with the changing of the guard that now sees Hawley take the helm. But, it is believed that Pine will return to lead the fourth film, with Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), Simon Pegg (Scotty), and Karl Urban (Bones) expected to reprise their roles too. There is no word on if John Cho will have time to return as Sulu or if Sofia Boutella will reprise her role as Jaylah from Star Trek Beyond. These details and story points should be revealed later on as Hawley continues development.

With his addition, Paramount once again appears comfortable putting the franchise's future in the hands of someone with limited experience in movies. Star Trek 4 would've been S.J. Clarkson's feature debut if she stayed aboard the project and it will just be Hawley's second movie. His directorial debut happened this year with Lucy in the Sky, which didn't exactly receive the desired response. Considering the current state of the Star Trek movie franchise though, Paramount needs Hawley's second venture to space to be more successful. Another shortcoming at the box office could force the Star Trek franchise to be put on ice for a while, which certainly isn't the desired state for the studio. Hopefully, that is easily avoided if Hawley is able to inject some new energy and style into the franchise with Star Trek 4.
