Star Trek Sequel Gets 2012 Release Date

The last bit of Star Trek news we reported on was star Zoe Saldana's claim that a the sequel to the J.J. Abrams directed reboot was going to go into pre-production around this time next year (it was unclear if she meant right around Christmas 2010 or at the very start of 2011). We went straight to one of the screenwriters, Roberto Orci, who informed us that, "until there's a script... all bets are off."

However, don't let that cast doubt over your hopes of a Star Trek sequel (Star Trek 2?) as we learn today from Paramount Pictures (thanks to Coming Soon) that the film is tentatively set to hit theaters on June 29th, 2012. Yup, that's two and a half years away, coming out just a few short months before that Mayan calendar runs out. So we can all see the new Captain Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Scotty, Uhura and the rest of the crew one more time before we're all doomed to our cities getting destroyed (if we're to believe Roland Emmerich's last blockbuster) :P .

The date that's apparently been set is a great one for the type of sure-fire-hit Star Trek 2 will be, as it's the first Friday before the July 4th weekend in 2012, and currently it's the only big movie scheduled to hit theaters that month. Although I suspect that will change when some animated movie we haven't heard of yet gets slapped right next to it.

Apart from the fact that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are returning to write the script - with Lost co-creator/writer/exec producer Damon Lindelof jumping on-board to help out - and that most of the cast will most likely be returning, we don't really know anything about the Star Trek sequel. Will Abrams return to direct? Who will be the villain this time around (there's been rumblings of Khan making an appearance possibly in the same way old Spock did last time)... Heck, what will the basic plot be?

It's all speculation at this point - but that's what Screen Rant's comment section is for!

What do you think of the Star Trek sequel getting a summer 2012 release date? Were you hoping for sooner? What are you expecting from the next film - a better villain? More action sequences or more character interaction? We'd love to hear your thoughts and speculation.

As stated, the currently untitled Star Trek sequel is tentatively set to hits theaters on June 29th, 2012.
