Star Trek 2 to Start Filming This Year? Not Likely

Actor Simon Pegg has set-off a cosmic storm of speculation regarding the production start date for Star Trek 2.

Speaking with Empire Online last night at the Empire Awards in London, Pegg commented on the status of the Trek sequel:

"I bug J.J. on a regular basis and he just fobs me off. But I saw Zoe Saldana recently and she reckons that it’s going to be soon. I would imagine it’ll be toward the end of the year, but I can’t guarantee it."

Trek Movie wasted no time throwing their opinion into the debate, asserting that, according to their sources, "the Star Trek sequel is not expected to start shooting until next year, probably in early Summer or late Spring." Though they felt comfortable with the notion that some Star Trek 2 work would be getting done in 2010, adding, "It is possible that the Star Trek sequel would go into pre-production this year."

While Pegg's time frame is certainly possible, it may be a bit ambitious. Screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are reportedly still hard at work on the script and J.J. Abrams would have to make a hard shift away from his Mission Impossible IV production responsibilities.

MI4 is scheduled to start filming in the summer - and is still without a director. Abrams is used to juggling a lot of high-profile projects and he's yet to make an official announcement in regards to whether or not he'll be sitting in the captain's - I mean director's - chair for the Star Trek sequel.

While fans of the Star Trek reboot are undoubtedly hungry for the follow-up, the franchise is facing a pivotal moment: Abrams and Paramount Pictures, as well as Kurtzman and Orci, know they've got one of the hottest properties in Hollywood right now - and it's hard to imagine they'd rush production in order to force the film out the door.

Fans of the reboot aren't going anywhere - especially those still hopeful for a high-tension Gorn fight in the sequel.

A production start in the first quarter of 2011 should leave plenty of time for the film to make it's scheduled release date.

Star Trek 2 is tentatively set for a June 29, 2012 release.
