Star Renegades is a rogue-lite RPG that allows players to lead a squad of rebels against their enemies. Using different strategies, players can predict the moves of their enemies, collect weapons, loot, and gear, and fight enemies that change and adapt as the game continues. Combat will be one of the most decisive components of the game, and players will need to be well prepared for it.

In strategy games, combat can appear to be complicated and difficult to understand. Luckily, Star Renegades gives players the opportunity to inspect enemies, plan out their attacks on a timeline, and take sneak peeks into the future to choose which enemies to target. Using the timeline, players will be able to reorder attacks, target particular enemies, and predict how enemies will react. Take the tips below into consideration when creating the ultimate battle strategy in Star Renegades.

How to Master Combat in Star Renegades

Star Renegades Combat Combos

Taking Actions

Characters will have a range of actions that they can take against their enemies each turn. Players can see these actions by clicking on a specific character and looking at the dropdown. Actions will also show players how the character will be placed on the timeline. Different actions will also cost different amounts, so keep this in mind when picking a strategy. Players will also be able to predict how much damage their character will inflict on an enemy. This prediction is not a guarantee, as many different things can happen to affect the outcome.

Inspect Mode

Using Inspect Mode, players can view a unit’s stats, enemies to target, and what attacks they’re vulnerable to. This information can help players make a strategy for defeating their enemies. Make sure to check the inspect mode frequently, players can predict how enemies will react, and how to approach them.

Timeline

The timeline will show players when their characters and their enemies will make their moves. This will show the order that actions will be made, so players will be able to plan attacks a few steps in advance. Players can also delay when their enemy’s actions will be made. Or, some characters can make quick attacks to set other players up for a bigger attack later on. The timeline will fluctuate, so players should take it into consideration throughout the game.

Crit Bonus

If a player can attack an enemy before they act, they will increase the amount of damage that is done to them. This is called a Crit. If every character on your team has an action before the enemy, players can get a Crit Bonus. Players will also be able to see on the timeline if their character will get a crit above their icon.

Kill-Shots

If a player has a move planned that will do fatal damage to an enemy, it will cause a kill shot. When this is shown, players can stop targeting this enemy, and start directing their attacks towards other enemies. But, keep in mind that enemies can affect whether or not the kill shot will land.

Stagger

Players can stagger an enemy to delay their actions on the timeline. Keep this in mind when planning strategies, as this may throw off a pattern that players depend upon to reach victory, or make it easier for players to defeat their enemies. If a character has been staggered all the way to the end of the timeline, they will Break and lose their turn. Focusing on a single enemy can reduce the damage the team takes in that round. If an enemy will have a break, it will be shown on the timeline. Enemies also have a Stagger Limit, which will eventually make them immune to Staggers. The limit can be seen next to the enemy’s icon on the timeline. Once the enemy takes another action, their Stagger Limit will increase.

Shields and Armor

Shields are a defensive item that can be used in battle. As shields are hit, they will be reduced until they are down for the rest of the fight, unless the character using them has the ability to recharge shields. Armor will also protect a character’s health. Different units will have different amounts of armor. Armor can be stripped away using certain attacks, and players can view the amount by reading the attack’s description. Players will need to reduce their enemy’s armor in longer fights so that their attacks are effective. Some attacks even have the ability to pierce armor, where they will cause damage to an enemy even when they’re wearing armor.

Combos

Players have special moves that they will need Fury to complete. Landing Crits and Breaks will generate Fury, which can then be used to perform special attacks, like Combos. These combos will do large amounts of damage to enemies.

Damage Types

Different enemies will have weaknesses that players can exploit to make the game easier. Each attack will have a damage type that will affect enemies differently. The types of damage that players can inflict are Light, Normal, Heavy, Flurry, Area of Effect, Counter, or Combo. Use the timeline to line up these attacks with the correct enemy, lining up Crits with the damage types that will most affect them.

With these combat tips, players will be able to tackle their enemies head-on and join the rebellion. Now that players can easily predict their enemies’ moves, they can make an air-tight strategy and take them out with combos, killshots, and crit bonuses.
