A huge, new Galactus-level threat is lurking in the Marvel Universe, as revealed by a recent Thor story, and the best hero to face it is none other than the reborn Peter Quill, now a true Star-Lord. After being used for years by the heroes of Earth to "dispose" of dangerous threats, including Knull, the Sun is poisoned and ready to unleash a brand-new extinction-level event. Luckily, Star-Lord recently awakened the true scope of his powers, which are also explicitly linked to the sun, with his mystical mentor calling him "Master of the Sun."

In Thor #21 by Donny Cates and Nic Klein, the God of Thunder learns that, when Jane Foster tied the Mangog to Mjolnir and threw both into the sun to get rid of the unstoppable monster, the spirit of the creature merged with the God Tempest within Mjolnir, creating the crazy and dangerous God of Hammers. The issue also teases that this dark combination may not be the only consequence of the Sun serving as the ultimate incinerator for Marvel heroes. The narrator of the story threatens, "There is only so much darkness one can throw into the Sun before the star turns black." There is a new evil growing within the Sun, one which will herald "total and complete extinction".

While it still remains unclear who or what this new threat could be, Marvel fans do know that Peter Quill needs to be the hero who faces it. In the now-canceled Guardians of the Galaxy series, by Al Ewing and Juann Cabal, Star-Lord's origins were retconned, paying homage to the character's actual first origin story from his debut in 1976' Marvel Preview #4, by Steve Englehart and Steve Gan. Englehart's original vision saw Peter Quill chosen to be the Star-Lord by a being known as the Master of the Sun, and his powers and motivations were supposed to have come from the motifs and themes seen in astrology, specifically the twelve houses of the Zodiac. However, as Chris Claremont took over writing Star-Lord by the time of his second appearance, his origins were completely retconned and he became a traditional space-faring hero with half-alien origins.

Thanks to Ewing and Cabal, Peter Quill is now the Master of the Sun once again, and he possesses new, incredible powers, as he proved when he easily destroyed one of Knull the Symbiote God's dragons during the King in Black event. The connection to Knull, who is the God of Darkness, could be particularly relevant. The King in Black was defeated by a cosmic-empowered Venom using the tried-and-true "throw him into the Sun" strategy, which means that Knull could actually be the evil that is growing inside the star. Sadly, very little was revealed about Star-Lord's new powers and role, as Guardians of the Galaxy was canceled shortly after these revelations.

However, this new threat is the perfect opportunity to dive into what Peter Quill's evolution means, as it seems this enemy will specifically target Star-Lord's new source of power. Either way, Star-Lord's title will be defined by this challenge: either he will face it directly and prove his worth, or he won't be the one to face the new threat introduced in Thor, in which case his "Master of the Sun" retcon will quickly be forgotten.
