Warning: minor spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy #12!

Peter Quill - aka the Legendary Star-Lord, leader of the Guardians of the Galaxy - just confirmed that his famous spaceship The Bowie has been completely destroyed - or, as Quill would have it, "killed." While the Marvel Comics version of Star-Lord, aka Peter Quill, spent longer on Earth than his MCU counterpart, both are heavily invested in '80s pop culture, expressing this love through the naming of their respective spaceships.

In the MCU, Peter Quill has typically named his ships after different celebrity crushes he had when he was a kid back on Earth in the '80s. For example, his first ship was named The Milano, named after actress Alyssa Milano, and his current ship is named The Benatar after singer Pat Benatar. In the comics, he also had a ship known as The Ryder after actress Winona Ryder. However, the Guardians' most current ship was named The Bowie back in Donny Cates' 2019 run of Guardians of the Galaxy, and it was actually Gamora who chose the name (despite Quill's suggestions for The Gellar or The Balk).

Unfortunately, the evil god Zeus blasted the Bowie into oblivion in Guardians of the Galaxy #11, and preview pages for the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy #12 - from writer Al Ewing and artist Juann Cabal - confirm that there'll be no repairs or last-second teleportation rescues. While Hercules, Rocket, and Marvel Boy survive the explosion thanks to a reality-warping device known as a Pocket Battlefield, the ship itself is toast, and it's implied that Groot went along with it.

Of course, fans knows that Groot will return next issue, as the Guardians of the Galaxy massively increase their scale, so the real tragedy is The Bowie. While the preview for Guardians of the Galaxy #12 shows Peter shooting out Zeus' eye in revenge, it seems like the ship is gone for good, likely to be replaced by another pop culture-referencing vehicle. It's a shame to see the ship destroyed so quickly (at least in comic terms), with Star-Lord losing his tribute to a musical giant.

On the plus side, the loss of one celebrity-named ship typically leads to a new one in the Marvel Universe, so perhaps Quill will end up with The Gellar or The Balk after all. In fact, given Marvel just allowed fans to vote in the recent X-Men team election, it could even end up being a reader decision! Fans will just have to wait and see what the future brings for Star-Lord and his next ship - that is, if he's one of the Guardians of the Galaxy who ends up surviving the team's clash with their god-tier villains.
