Star Fox 2 might not have been released on the Super Nintendo, but now it's cropping up everywhere, as it will be available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers on December 12 along with five other games. The original Star Fox was a huge hit for the Super Nintendo in '93 and a sequel entered development shortly after it was released, but the primitive 3D graphics led to Nintendo canceling the project, due to the upcoming release of the Nintendo 64.
Star Fox 2 had already been completed when it was shelved and roms of the game in various stages of development leaked online, so many fans believed that the only way they would ever be able to the game is on an emulator. The official release of the game happened in 2017, when Nintendo added Star Fox 2 to the SNES Classic and heavily promoted its inclusion on the system.
It will soon be possible for Nintendo Switch owners to play Star Fox 2, as it's being added to the library of Super Nintendo games that are available to Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. Nintendo added twenty Super Nintendo games to the Switch back in September, including classic games like Super Mario World and Super Metroid. The official Nintendo YouTube account has confirmed that four new Super Nintendo games will be available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers on December 12, including Star Fox 2, Super Punch-Out!!, Kirby Super Star, and Breath of Fire II.
It isn't just the Super Nintendo library that is receiving new additions this month, as there will also be two new Nintendo Entertainment System games added to Nintendo Switch Online in December. Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will receive Crystalis and Journey to Silius on the same day as the Super Nintendo games.
The Star Fox license has had a rough few years, as Star Fox Zero for the Nintendo Wii U was met with a mixed critical reception due to its unwieldy control scheme. The most notable deeds that the Star Fox crew have accomplished in the past few years are making the Nintendo Switch port of Starlink a much better game and Wolf finally making his long-awaited return to the Super Smash Bros. series. The reaction to Star Fox Zero might have killed the prospect of a new Star Fox game on the Nintendo Switch, but at least the fans can still enjoy a gem of a game that many thought would never see an official release.
Star Fox 2, Super Punch-Out!!, Kirby Super Star, Breath of Fire II, Crystalis, and Journey to Silius will be available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers to download on December 12, 2019.
