The classic '80s film Stand by Me will be returning to theaters for its 35th anniversary. Stand by Me is an adaptation of the Stephen King novella The Body and is generally considered to be one of the best takes on the author's work. The film follows four boys during Labor Day weekend in 1959, as they journey near the town of Castle Rock in search of the body of a missing boy. Released in 1986, Stand by Me is widely seen as a standout in the coming-of-age movie genre.
Per Cinema Blend, in honor of the film's 35th anniversary, Stand by Me will be get a limited run theatrical re-release. The theatrical run comes curiosity of Fathom Events and will have four screenings nationwide: two on May 23 and two on May 26. The screenings will also include a 37-minute behind-the-scenes featurette titled Walking The Tracks: The Summer Of Stand by Me, which will contain interviews from King, director Rob Reiner, and several members of the cast.
There probably isn't a better time to re-release Stand by Me than now. The popularity of '80s nostalgia, largely created by Stranger Things (which itself is heavily inspired by Stand by Me) will likely help expose the film to a new generation. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has also created a drought for new movie releases, and the re-release of a classic like Stand by Me is sure to draw in audiences. It could be the perfect way to kick off this summer's blockbuster season.
