Stan Lee is going to appear both in person and in a new virtual reality experience as part of a panel at San Diego Comic-Con. The legendary Marvel figurehead is well-known for his cameos in Marvel Studios movies, which continues in 2017 with appearances in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and Thor: Ragnarok. So, naturally, Lee had to appear at Comic-Con somehow.
It's the dream of millions of Marvel Comics fans to meet Lee. But even if that dream doesn't come true, a new project from Legion M - which bills itself as "the world's first fan-owned entertainment company" - aims to offer the next best thing: a face-to-face interview through a VR headset.
Legion M announced on Friday that San Diego Comic-Con will mark the debut of footage from their new VR project, ICONS: Face to Face, which allows fans to have virtual face-to-face interviews with Lee and other yet-to-debut industry legends. The footage will premiere as part of the panel Stan Lee & Friends: A Celebrity Tribute to the Comic Legend, which will take place in Room 6DE of the San Diego Convention Center on Friday, July 21 at 12:30 p.m.
Legion M president and co-founder Jeff Annison said in a press release that ICONS: Face to Face stemmed from the simple idea of putting fans in the same room with iconic figures, and they were simply fortunate enough to get Lee to be the first to agree to participate. Here's what Annison said:
"We had this idea of trying to put you in the room with these legendary icons. And we got Stan on board - miraculously. We pitched him this idea, and he really liked our model of a company owned by fans instead of a corporate conglomerate. In fact he said, 'It's such a good idea, I wish I'd thought of it myself!'"
Lee will appear in person as part of the panel, which also includes Q&As with him and two of his most famous fans, actress Felicia Day (Supernatural) and former Mythbusters host Adam Savage. The event will certainly be packed with Marvel fans eager to see the legendary Lee in person, as well as get a glimpse of the ICONS: Face to Face VR experience.
Of course, any Marvel Comics fan would probably prefer to be able to actually meet Lee in person, shake his hand, and hear his voice. But considering the advancements made in VR technology in recent years, ICONS: Face to Face is a project that Lee fans could be eager to try out anyway. It may not be the same as meeting Lee in the flesh, but it's the closest thing to it - and everyone will soon get to see Lee in Spider-Man: Homecoming anyway.
