Kevin Smith, among others, will pay tribute to Stan Lee in a massive Hollywood event set to occur on January 30. Lee, who passed away in November 2018, made a name for himself as a comic writer and pop culture icon. He got his start, though, with the U.S. Army during World War II as a writer for instruction manuals and scripts for training films. After completing his military service, he wrote for Atlas Comics, which would later become Marvel Comics.
In 1945, Lee teamed up with Jack Kirby, with the two going on to create some of the most iconic characters in comics, including the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, Thor and the Incredible Hulk. Many fans know Lee's face, though, for his cameo appearances in Marvel movies that began in 1989 with The Trial of the Incredible Hulk and continued into the new age of Marvel movies that include the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His most recent appearances on film occurred after his death: fans spotted him immediately in animated form in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. He is also expected to have cameos in several upcoming Marvel films, including Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame and Spider-Man: Far From Home.
As announced today, Kevin Smith, Legion M and Agents of Mayhem will partner with Stan Lee's POW! Entertainment for a Lee tribute titled "Excelsior! A Celebration of the Amazing, Fantastic, Incredible & Uncanny Life of Stan Lee." The event, which will happen on Jan. 30 at the TCL Chinese Theatre forecourt, will also benefit The Hero Initiative, one of Lee's favorite charities that helps comic book creators in need. A limited number of tickets will become available to the public on Jan. 9 at 5 p.m. PST on The Legion M website. Those lucky enough to attend the event will get treated to select speakers, as well as an art exhibit by Rob Prior, costumes and props from Lee's movie cameos and a special remembrance ceremony around Lee's Hollywood Walk of Fame star. A private tribute will occur later that evening inside the theatre.
Since his death, fans have continued to pay their own special tributes at Lee's Hollywood Walk of Fame star, leaving behind a small shrine of flowers, notes, pictures and candles honoring the late comic creator. Lee's official website also briefly served as a public tribute wall, allowing fans to leave messages and remembrances dedicated to him. The site now features blog posts by those inspired by Lee and his work.
Additional details about the "Excelsior" event will release soon. Fans can keep up by following the social media accounts of Kevin Smith, Legion M, Agents of Mayhem, and Stan Lee’s POW! Entertainment. The event will serve as a lovely tribute to a man who inspired imaginations all over the world and will give fans another chance to say goodbye.
