James Gunn has shared another behind-the-scenes photo from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, this time giving fans a look at the filming of Stan Lee's cameo. Marvel Studios recruited Gunn to write and direct the sequel even before the first Guardians film had hit theaters, and it has paid off big time. Not only did Vol. 2 outgross its predecessor, but the creative freedom afforded to Gunn on Guardians 2 convinced him to return for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 and help develop years' worth of stories for the future of Marvel's Cosmic Universe.
As part of the expanding universe, Vol. 2 laid quite a few seeds for future films. The introduction of Sylvester Stallone's own Ravager team in Vol. 2 could lead to bigger things in the future, as could the Guardians sequel's introduction of several new planets in the MCU. Part of the expansion (but not "The Expansion" - Ego's evil plan) also played a big part in Stan Lee's cameo.
Gunn has shared a new behind-the-scenes photo on Instagram from the set of Vol. 2 when he was prepping to film Lee's latest MCU appearance. As shown in the movie, Gunn connects all of Lee's MCU cameos together by showing him reporting to the Watchers. However, given their larger than life appearances, the one shown in this picture understandably looks a bit different.
With @therealstanlee and a pre-VFX Watcher on set and me geeking out as usual. The introduction of The Watchers is no small moment in the history of the MCU. Even though Marvel Studios does not have the rights to use Uatu the Watcher, they can use lesser-known Watchers (like Rooatu and Boofu, according to Gunn). Considering Thanos is preparing for his full-scale attack on the universe, the Watchers could appear in the MCU again in the future, but won't be interfering with whatever is happening.
Still, this proved to be one Lee's most famous cameos, in no small part because it confirmed the long-standing fan theories about Lee's role in the MCU. With that theory now "official" and Lee being an honorary Watcher of sorts, his continued interaction with Earth's Mightiest Heroes makes them that much more important - while also explaining how one man can travel all across the galaxy at ease.
Just like so many others, Gunn is a huge fan of Stan Lee's - which is why if any director was going to make this theory canon, it would be him. They also appear to have a strong relationship - not only from this photo - as Gunn was the one who filmed four of Lee's MCU cameos in a single day. Lee's cameos are already solidified for future films as well, with the legendary storyteller having revealed he has five more MCU cameos in the books now - and we can't wait to see them all.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is now available on 4K, Blu-Ray, DVD, and VOD.
