Netflix's survival drama Squid Game left a bunch of unanswered questions and mysteries for its viewers to ponder. After the September 2021 release of Squid Game on Netflix, the series very quickly became the most watched show by users of the streaming service in the U.S. and abroad. These audiences are already clamoring for Squid Game season 2.

Squid Game is the latest drama series in the death games horror sub-genre, similar to shows and movies such as Battle Royale, Alice In Borderland, The Hunger Games and the popular Saw films. Apart from showing tons of bloody body horror and creative ways for people to die, Squid Game, at its heart, is a story of wealth inequality in modern Korea. It’s led by a stellar cast of popular and niche actors, each one well-suited to the respective characters they play in Squid Game.

What Is Seong Gi-Hun’s Plan After The Final Scene Of Squid Game?

Seong Gi-Hun smiles while holding a spoon and some money in Squid Game

During the ninth and final episode of Squid Game, protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is alighting a train on his way to the airport. Using the billions of Korean won that was awarded to him after winning Squid Game, Gi-hun is finally going to the U.S. to see his daughter and try to become the father he’s always wanted to be – one of the main reasons he volunteered for the games in the first place. As Gi-hun alights the train to the airport, he spots The Salesman (Gong Yoo of Train to Busan) recruiting someone for Squid Game with a game of ddakji, which was how he himself was recruited. The Salesman manages to escape a confrontation, so Gi-hun confronts the person he was playing ddajki with instead, telling him not to go and even snagging the card given by The Salesman. As he is about to board his flight, Gi-hun calls the number on the card and proceeds to exchange threats with the Squid Game representative on the other line. Gi-hun then drops the call, turns around, and rushes out of the boarding gate with a look of determination on his face. Does this mean that Gi-hun plans to infiltrate or take down Squid Game? If so, couldn’t the VIPs just take away his billions? Is his money even safe, considering it was given to him by the late Squid Game founder Oh Il-nam (Oh Young-soo)?

Is Hwang Jun-ho Still Alive At The End Of Squid Game?

Whether police officer Hwang Jun-ho is still alive or not is one of the biggest unresolved questions in Squid Game. After successfully infiltrating the island and gathering more than enough evidence to put Squid Game’s workers and VIPs in prison, Jun-ho’s cover gets blown, and he gets pursued by the Front Man and his armed guards. Jun-ho gets cornered by the Front Man, who reveals himself to be In-ho (Lee Byung-hun), the long-lost brother that Jun-ho was looking for in the island. When In-ho fails to get Jun-ho to surrender, the Front Man shoots the police officer in the shoulder, and Jun-ho’s body falls off the cliff and into the sea. However, we never see his corpse, nor is there a scene wherein In-ho or one of the armed guards finishes the job. Since the shoulder shot is non-fatal – and Jun-ho falls into the water – there’s a chance that he’s still alive. Will Jun-ho return in Squid Game season 2? If so, will Gi-hun and Jun-ho finally team up to somehow infiltrate or take down Squid Game?

How And Why Did In-Ho Become The Squid Game Front Man?

The Front Man wearing his mask in Squid Game

Before Jun-ho was shot by In-ho, the police officer managed to make it into the Front Man’s inner sanctum and locate Squid Game’s extensive archives of player files. The archives are kept in a large room of physical folders, with files that range from the ‘90s to the present day. This confirms the organizers’ claims that they know everything there is to know about the players who are chosen to participate, as the folders contain extensive information on anyone who’s ever worn the Squid Game player tracksuit. After looking through these folder, Jun-ho finds out that his missing brother In-ho won Squid Game in 2015. However, this doesn’t really answer how and why In-ho climbed the ranks of Squid Game and took on the mantle of Front Man. In relation to this, will he be back to take Il-nam’s place in Squid Game season 2?

Who Are The Other VIPs Betting On Squid Game?

Near the end of the series, Squid Game reveals that VIPs get together to bet on the outcomes of each of the death games. While there are several VIPs, Squid Game only shows the faces of two: Il-nam and the unnamed white VIP who took a liking to Jun-ho. Most of the other VIPs are never shown without their golden animal masks, nor are their names and backgrounds revealed. Who are these VIPs, really? If they can afford to give away the 45.6 billion won Squid Game grand prize, bet on the games, and still make all the necessary pay-offs to ensure their security on and off the island, just how rich and powerful could these VIPs be?

How Many Other Death Games Are Happening All Over The World (And Where)?

Players in green jumpsuits walk and crouch on a cement court in Squid Game.

While watching the games, one of the Squid Game VIPs remarks that the games in Korea are the best that this year has to offer. This clearly implies that there are similar death games happening all over the world. Apart from the Squid Game island near Seoul, South Korea, which other countries and continents are these death games simultaneously happening? How many death games are there?

Where (Or When) Will Squid Game Season 2 Take Place?

As explained by the Squid Game ending, in which Gi-hun attempts to register for the next leg of death games, the organizers are still at it. Season 2 could simply be a continuation of the games on the island near Seoul, but with a different set of Korean children’s games. Show runners could also choose to explore the other death games happening in other countries and continents, which would present an opportunity to tackle other traditional games and societal norms, as well as to put a spotlight on a different bunch of unknown actors. Another direction that Squid Game season 2 could take is to focus on some of the earlier games, which could reveal how In-ho won the 2015 games, or how Il-nam founded the organization. In any case, audiences are not ready to see one of the best new K-dramas end without these mysteries and questions getting resolved, which means that Squid Game season 2 is bound to get a green light from Netflix very soon.
