Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk is developing a new satire show called The Best Show on the Planet, which is based on the success of Squid Game. Released on Netflix last year, Squid Game quickly became a global phenomenon and would eventually come to hold the record for the streamer's most-watched original piece of content ever. The South Korean survival drama series chronicled the lives of a select few contestants who participate in a series of children's games with deadly stakes in order to win a large cash prize.
Dong-hyuk is already hard at work developing Squid Game season 2 for Netflix, which he has already confirmed will feature exciting new games and release at some point in 2023 or 2024. The first season ended with the central character, Seong Gi-hun, surviving the final game, the titular Squid Game, and coming away with the prize money. The first season of Squid Game reached over 100 million households faster than any other Netflix original show and, in its first week alone, was streamed for over three billion minutes.
In a new interview with Deadline, Dong-hyuk confirms that not only is he working on season 2 of Squid Game, he's also working on another satire show about Squid Game's success, dubbed The Best Show on the Planet. While few details are offered about the show, Dong-hyuk confirms that the series is very much in the early planning stages.
It's unclear exactly what the story of the new show will be or who will star in it, but it certainly seems like fans of Squid Game are in for a very interesting, self-referential exploration of a series that dominated popular culture for much of last year. Squid Game was heavily praised for its social messaging, a trend that Dong-hyuk seems intent on continuing with The Best Show on the Planet.
