Netflix unveils new behind-the-scenes pictures from their latest hit series, Squid Game, that shows the cast smiling and having a fun time – quite the contrast to their character counterparts. Squid Game was released last month and immediately became a global phenomenon overnight, shattering Bridgerton's viewership record to become Netflix's biggest original series of all time. Since its release, the series has spawned countless pop culture references as well as even inspiring real-world Squid Game-style survival tournaments (without the killing, of course).
The show has earned a reputation for its shocking and gruesome deaths, which many of the main cast succumb to. Most if not all of the game's contestants come from impoverished backgrounds, which explains why they are willing to risk their lives for the slim chance to win the grand prize of KRW 45.6 billion (approximately $38.7 million). The reimagined childhood games that the show takes inspiration from providing a stark juxtaposition with the brutal nature of the show's subject matter. Despite Squid Game's bleak tone, the series was a joy to make behind the scenes as many of the behind-the-scenes looks at the production show the cast and crew having a great time.
Netflix Geeked's Twitter account released eight BTS photos that give a glimpse of Squid Game's cast being playful between takes. Characters like Kang Sae-byeok (Jung Ho-yeon) and Jang Deok-su (Heo Sung-tae) beam as they look at camera monitors, a far cry from the duo's dynamic within the context of the show. The pictures also give a sheer sense of scale behind the show's production. Each image shows off enormous sets, countless costumed extras, and in some cases, even both. Squid Game's production and costume designers managed to achieve a fair amount of mileage despite the show's relatively modest budget of $21.4 million. The picture with Sang-woo (Park Hae-soo) on a stretcher alone shows numerous extras, many of whom are dressed in the show's iconic guard uniforms.
With the show's first season now concluded, the pictures also serve as a bittersweet reminder that these actors won't be reuniting onscreen any time soon. The culminating arcs of many of the show's cast members make it impossible for them to reprise their role in a potential follow-up. Hopefully, Squid Game's casting department will be able to recapture the magic of season 1's cast whenever season 2 begins production.
