Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Squid Game

Squid Game star Wi Ha-jun hopes that his character, Hwang Jun-ho, survived his ambiguous ending at the end of season 1, and that he will return for season 2. The show itself, written and directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, debuted last month on Netflix and has quickly become  the most-watched Netflix show ever. Throughout this time, the series has managed to maintain the number one spot on the streamer's "Top 10 in the U.S. Today" category.

In the show, Jun-ho is a detective who goes undercover to unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of his brother. He stows away aboard a ship and infiltrates the secret island where the Squid Game tournament is held. Disguised as one of the many masked guards who facilitate the games, he eventually learns that his brother (Lee Byung-hun) is the right-hand man of the mastermind that initially founded the games in the first place. Unfortunately, he is only able to send a rushed phone call back to his headquarters before he is discovered and shot by his own brother's hand. However, his ultimate fate is unknown as the camera avoids showing Jun-ho after he collapses into the ocean.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Wi discussed what he hopes to see from Jun-ho if he were to potentially return for season 2. The 30-year-old South Korean actor says that he is "dying to know what happened to [Jun-ho]." He goes on to say that he "want[s] him to return alive, find his brother and ask him tons of questions." Check out Wi's full comments below:

I’m dying to know what happened to him. I want him to return alive, find his brother and ask him tons of questions. As a brother, I would ask him sincerely. As a detective, I want to explore the overall secrets behind the game as well. I really hope to see Jun-ho come back alive and explore all these questions. I hope to see a more brotherly-love side of their relationship as well.

Squid Game Front Man With Gun

Indeed, one of the more underdeveloped aspects of the show's first season is the dynamic between Jun-ho and his brother. Despite building up the mystery throughout the season, neither character receives a particularly satisfying send-off by the finale. Hopefully Wi is able to return for season 2 to resolve some of the dangling threads that were left unaddressed in season 1.

Jun-ho's storyline is an essential component of Squid Game's overarching narrative, despite the fact that he is not a contestant himself. His actions on the island provide most of the show's background lore by fleshing out the history of the games as well as the day-to-day responsibilities of Squid Game's masked guards. Although the fruits of his detective work don't come to fruition by the season finale, hopefully he will return in season 2 to complete the work he started.
