Netflix announces that Squid Game season 2 has been greenlit, while creator Hwang Dong-hyuk teases new and returning characters. Squid Game season 1 took the world by storm when it hit Netflix in 2021. Speculation has since run rampant about when the streamer would finally give the go ahead for season 2.

Squid Game creator Dong-hyuk has for his part remained largely optimistic during all this season 2 speculation while dropping occasional hints of what he has in store for fans. Back in April, Dong-hyuk offered up a huge bit of news when he confirmed that Squid Game season 1 main protagonist Gi-hun would be back for season 2 along with the mysterious masked villain the Front Man. In May, the Squid Game mastermind offered another tease when he said season 2 would deal with themes of solidarity. He also promised in May that Squid Game season 2 would feature “better games” than those in season 1.

All these teases were of course offered in the absence of a Squid Game season 2 confirmation from Netflix. But now the streamer has ended the suspense by announcing that season 2 is officially greenlit. They also offered up a creepy teaser video which can be seen in the space below. Also in the space below is a message from Dong-hyuk offering a few updates about the new season:

Dong-hyuk’s message indeed reveals nothing new when it confirms previously teased developments like Gi-hun and the Front Man’s return. The message does also tease the “possible” return of the salesman who in Squid Game season 1 first roped Gi-hun and the other contestants in with his seemingly innocent game of ddakji. The biggest reveal of all though is that the game’s sinister animatronic robot Young-hee has a “boyfriend” named Cheol-su who will apparently be introduced to fans in season 2.

Squid Game season 1 obviously closed the door on a lot of returning character possibilities given its sheer body count. But Gi-hun was a natural to return as the winner of Squid Game, as was the Front Man. Barring any weird soap opera secret identical twin twists, it seems unlikely that Squid Game season 1 stars like Park Hae-soo, Jung Ho-Yeon or Anupam Tripathi will be returning for season 2. There is however a chance that Wi Ha-joon could be back as Hwang Jun-ho as the character’s fate was kept ambiguous.

Of course Netflix is keeping most of what will happen in Squid Game season 2 a secret. They are also not ready to announce a premiere date yet, and all Dong-hyuk would say on that subject is that he sees 2023 or 2024 as the timeframe for release. Fans may still be in the dark about what to really expect in Squid Game season 2, or even how long they will have to wait, but at least they now know for sure that season 2 is happening and have gotten a small taste of what they can look forward to.
