Just in time for Halloween, the red jumpsuits from Squid Game are proving to be a big hit. Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game is a South Korean survival thriller. It focuses on a contest where 456 players, all deeply in debt, play deadly variations on several children’s games for a chance to win a huge cash prize. The series stars Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, O Yeong-su, Wi Ha-joon, Jung Ho-yeon, Heo Sung-tae, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Joo-ryoung.

Since arriving to Netflix on September 17, Squid Game has proved a massive hit and could very well be the streaming service’s most successful original show ever. Part of the reason the show has managed to resonate so quickly with audiences comes down to its memorable iconography. Already, the Korean-language drama has made many of its moments and scenes imminently familiar. Some of those moments include treats, like Honeycomb Toffee, while others are related to the characters’ attires, like the green tracksuits that many of the protagonists wear throughout Squid Game’s nine episodes. However, a different type of suit, worn by the show’s faceless guards, looks to be equally popular.

According to the shop boohooMAN, searches for “red jumpsuit” have spiked 170% since the series’ premiere. It’s not the first time that a Netflix original has caused a big increase in this type of clothing. Comments from boohooMAN said that after the premiere of Money Heist in 2017 (another thriller featuring red jumpsuits) searches for the term “red jumpsuit” leapt by 203%. Given the previous history with Money Heist, red jumpsuits are a strong candidate to be a must-have Halloween costume due to Squid Game's popularity.

The surge in demand for Squid Game-related costumes is just another indication of how the thriller has caught on immensely with audiences, after a giant lifelike doll from Squid Game was recently installed in a mall. What's more, as Netflix is being sued due to the massive increase in traffic caused by the series, these are signs beyond traditional ratings and viewership numbers that the South Korean drama has emerged by surprise to become one of Netflix’s most valued originals. All told, it bodes well for a potential Squid Game season 2, although its creator has said he isn't thinking about a sequel just yet.

When considering what has made the show so relevant, it helps to look at the jumpsuits and the guards themselves. They fit seamlessly with the thriller’s searing criticisms of capitalism. They guards are unidentifiable strangers, dolling out their tasks regardless of who they might hurt or, ultimately, kill. But even if they do try to step out of their assigned roles and do the right thing, they’re still caught in the same cruel system, and would pay for the transgression with their lives. The red jumpsuits also look immensely cool, of course, and they’d be a perfect Halloween costume. But more than just being aesthetically alluring, the outfits also fit perfectly well with what Squid Game is trying to say.
