The real-life recreation of Squid Game put on by YouTuber MrBeast will officially be streaming this afternoon. Squid Game is the surprise smash hit Korean drama created by Hwang Dong-hyuk that premiered on Netflix in September of this year. The show follows a group of adults who are competing in children's games with deadly consequences for a chance to win 45.6 billion won. The scintillating drama and iconic costumes of the show struck a nerve with the viewing public, with Squid Game topping the Nielsen streaming charts for a full month before it was replaced by You, another Netflix series.

In early October, Mr. Beast announced his intention to recreate Squid Game with 456 real-life people. He began building a massively expensive set that is rumored to cost multiple millions of dollars. The contestants will be competing in the same games as the show for an actual cash prize, though the people who don't win will not in fact be killed.

MrBeast shared the full info on his Twitter today, announcing that the event would begin streaming today, November 24, 2021, at 4 PM Eastern/1 PM Pacific. He also shared four full images of the set that has been built for the event, recreating the iconic look of the original show. The first image shows his version of the show's most iconic set, the desert-like red-light green-light arena ruled over by a massive porcelain doll, but he has also brought the tug-of-war set, the maze room, and the Brawl Stars arena to vivid life. This is just the latest of MrBeast's massively expensive stunts. After rising to prominence in the YouTube sphere in 2017 for more mundane content, he began to turn his eye toward conceptually audacious philanthropy, earning him the Breakout Creator award at the 2019 Streamy Awards. Typically his videos are sponsored by various brands and see him donating huge sums of money to worthy charities or to subscribers, the prizes usually co-sponsored by a brand. He hasn't yet announced if this project is in collaboration with anyone, but it would be surprising if Netflix didn't kick in a few thousand dollars to boost his prize pool.

One big reason for the popularity of Squid Game is that people watching at home could imagine themselves playing the game and what they would do in that situation. Now MrBeast is giving those people a chance to put their money where their mouth is and see just how difficult the game was for the characters on the show. For those who are hungry for more Squid Game content before season 2, this stream will be a must-watch.
