One of Squid Game’s life and death playground pastimes involves the classic Korean honeycomb toffee or dalgona candy treat; here's how to make it at home. The objective of the game is to use a needle to perfectly carve out the shape of the design that’s imprinted on the treat. If the design gets broken in any way, the player is eliminated. The honeycomb toffee game is just one of the many real Korean children’s games featured on Squid Game. And as many players found out in the worst possible way, it might be the hardest game in the survival drama series – but only if a player goes into it blindly.

Certain techniques can make carving out the shape in the honeycomb toffee treat a lot easier. Han Mi-nyeo (Kim Joo-ryung) made it through a game by using a smuggled lighter to heat up the needle and carve through the sugar like butter. Meanwhile, the resourceful Ali Abdul (Tripathi Anupam), who mistakenly picked the circle, slowly tore away the outside part of the treat to succeed. As the game neared its time limit, Squid Game protagonist Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) discovered that the easiest way to do it is to lick the back of the toffee treat, which separates the central shape from the treat without any damage. Other Squid Game players were lucky enough to have chosen a shape that’s easy to carve out without any special techniques, such as the triangle or the star. Throughout this leg of Squid Game, it’s shown that there are many ways to win the honeycomb toffee treat game.

But how are the sugary treats made in the first place? Before the game, Kang Sae-byok (Jung Ho-yeon) managed to sneak above one of the utility rooms of the Squid Game workers, and she saw that they were melting sugar in large pots. This is the first step to making Squid Game’s honeycomb toffee treat. Only two ingredients are needed: sugar and baking soda. Surprisingly, no honey is involved in making Korean honeycomb toffee candy. To make a smaller batch, heat up a pan to medium heat, throw in some sugar, and stir until it gets fully dissolved. It should be browned and carmelized by this point.

The next step comes after the sugar is caramelized. Remove the sugar from the direct source of heat so it doesn't overcook and burn. After that, add a pinch of baking soda and stir again to ensure that it gets into the entire mixture – not too much, however, or the mixture will get better. Optionally, one can also imagine that they're a Squid Game worker while doing this.

Pour out the resulting mixture into molds spaced out over a baking sheet. As the mixture hardens, that’s when cookie cutters can be pressed into the molds to create the central patterns – just don’t press too hard as that might break the treat. Remove the cookie cutters, then allow the treats to cool down before removing them from the molds. Enjoy them as is, or play a round of the honeycomb toffee treat game with other Squid Game fans.
