A behind-the-scenes video from Squid Game shows how much CGI the series used. Created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, Squid Game has become a global phenomenon and one of Netflix’s most popular series of all time. Written and directed by Dong-hyuk, the survival thriller focuses on a deadly contest that involves 456 people from all walks of life who become players in a series of children’s games to win the ultimate cash prize.

Starring Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Gong Yoo, Lee Byung-hun, and HoYeon Jung, Squid Game has solidified its place as a pop culture phenomenon. Since the show's debut in September, Netflix launched an official Squid Game merchandise line, Squid Game cryptocurrency made headlines, and popular YouTuber Mr. Beast built a real-life Squid Game set. Despite Squid Game recently losing its number one spot on Netflix’s charts, the series has maintained its popularity. Now, a new video reveals the depth of Squid Game’s visual effects.

The amount of CGI used to make the six games, pastel staircases, and deadly islands where the games are hosted look real may come as a surprise to viewers who became immersed by the powerhouse performances from the Squid Game cast and direction of Dong-hyuk. Spanning nine shocking, violent, and visually alluring episodes, Squid Game season 1 created stellar CGI effects that were integrated seamlessly to help draw the audience into the story. It's good to see that the immense effort that went into the hit series paid off in a big way.

Indeed, Squid Game continues to resonate with viewers for being so much more than a series about survival games, as the show explores how desperation can corrode humanity and whether human beings are decent at the core. For now, Squid Game shows no sign of slowing down. Earlier this month, Dong-hyuk confirmed Squid Game season 2 was in development, which could continue Gi-hun’s story or take another direction entirely. For now, it can be expected that Squid Game season 2 will provide a riveting plot line and more impressive visual effects when it arrives on Netflix.
