Developer Offworld Industries announced the future of Steam title Squad with Modding 2.0, the next generation of tools built to enhance the way that modders end up developing and sharing their work with the community, alongside the exciting addition of the Canadian Armed Forces faction to the game. The Canadian Armed Forces actually started out as a mod and was then tagged to be developed into official free DLC for Squad after feedback on the faction was positive.

Squad is a game that aims to be as realistic about military combat as possible, and the modern tactical FPS game has been well-received on Steam, especially from genre aficionados. Gameplay is, naturally, squad-based, with two different sides of many different squads fighting each other. Each squad is made up of classes selected by an individual player, like medics and anti-tanks, and these players are all then led by a single squad leader who organizes communication with other allied squads. Matches occur on large-scale maps that make for extremely tactical maneuvers.

Now, the Canadian Armed Forces will be joining Squad courtesy of a free DLC update from Offworld Industries. The Canadian Armed Forces will add new weapons, vehicles, and maps, and the developer is hoping to highlight some of the nuances of the Canadian military. The new update will also include two Canadian maps, Quebec and Nanisivik, which will have snowy environments designed for combined-arms combat that will inevitably require some close-quarters and quick-thinking.

On top of the free content that's coming with the update, Squad will also launch Modding 2.0, a new set of tools that are meant to emphasize the game's burgeoning modding community. As the Canadian Armed Forces developed out of a mod, it makes sense for Offworld Industries to double down and offer its community more tools with which to create even more potential content. Players interested in these new updates will also be able to download the tactical shooter for free on Steam this weekend starting at 10am PDT July 26 until 1pm PDT July 28.

Clearly, the addition of new content is something that Offworld Industries will spark more interest in Squad, a shooter that's reviewed extremely positive in the Steam community but has failed to gain a lot of ground in terms of popular recognition. At the very least, increasing the amount of Canadian representation will tap into a demographic that often goes over-looked in shooters, especially with maps based out of real-world locations in Canada.
