Spy x Family
Created by Tatsuya Endo, Spy X Family is an action-adventure comedy anime that follows the misadventures of a found family with unique quirks. The story follows spy Twilight (known as Loid Forger), who, while on assignment, builds a fake family to get closer to his target. Unbeknownst to him, his new family carries their quirks. His wife, Yor, is a kind but deadly assassin, while his daughter, Anya, has telepathic powers - and is the only one who knows their secrets.
Although Spy x Family just wrapped up its first season at the end of last year, the anime studios responsible for the hit show have already announced plans for Spy x Family season 2. They also released plans for a movie to be released around the same time, meaning fans will have plenty to look forward to.
Spy x Family is produced by WIT Studio and CloverWorks adapting the popular manga by Tatsuya Endo. It follows the Forger family, made up of Loid who is a spy, his wife Yor, who is an assassin working for his enemy, and their daughter Anya, a telepath who is the only one that knows both of their secret identities. The latter half of the first season also introduced the adorable clairvoyant dog Bond who the Forgers adopted. Over the course of the season, Spy x Family featured both lighthearted slice-of-life episodes and intense espionage plots. Season 2 is likely to continue that trend as Operation Strix develops further.
Latest Spy x Family Season 2 News
The latest news about season 2 comes from the Spy x Family Twitter account. A couple of months after Spy x Family's second season was announced to release in 2023 at Jump Festa, the Twitter account tweeted what month it would release and where it would be broadcast in Japan. While this tweet largely focused on the Spy x Family movie, it is still exciting news for fans looking forward to the second season.
Spy x Family Season 2 Release Date
It was announced on Twitter that Spy x Family Season 2 would be released in October 2023. It is unclear the exact day it will premiere on or when it would run to, but at least Spy x Family fans can plan to watch the show in the Fall. If it has a similar length to season 1 it may even run into the beginning of 2024.
Spy x Family Season 2 Story Details
The second season will adapt the fan-favorite Cruise Adventure arc, which features the Forger family vacationing on a luxurious cruise ship. The catch is that in her role as an assassin, Yor must also protect an important family from the hitmen who want to kill them. Before reaching this arc, the anime will hopefully adapt chapters 39-42, which take place in between where the show ended and where the Cruise Adventure Arc begins. These chapters aren’t essential to the overall plot, but they have some great character moments and slice-of-life elements. These chapters plus the 15 chapters of the Cruise Adventure arc don’t seem like quite enough to fill out a full season of anime, so it may also adapt the next arc which dives into Loid’s traumatic Spy x Family backstory and why he became a spy.
Spy x Family Season 2 Teaser Trailer
The Toho Animation YouTube channel has released a teaser for Season 2. It isn’t fully animated, mainly using art from the manga, but it teases at the plot of the Cruise Adventure arc, showing the Forger Family getting tickets for the cruise and Loid’s terrible vacation outfit. Even over a short period of time, the character interactions in the teaser are as cute and hilarious as they were in season 1, so Spy x Family's second season will likely be just as good if not better than the first.
Spy x Family Season 2 Cast and Characters
Loid, Yor, and Anya will all be heavily featured in Season 2 and based on the teaser, their voice actors are likely going to be reprising their roles. Depending on how many of the slice-of-life chapters the anime is adapting, fans may see less of the delightful supporting cast like Housemaster Henderson, Becky Blackwell, or Franky. But it is unlikely that the show will neglect these characters for an entire season despite them not playing roles in the Cruise Adventure arc, so fans should still expect to see them even if for just one episode.
Where to Watch Spy x Family Season 2
Just like Season 1, Spy x Family's second season is expected to air simultaneously on Crunchyroll and Hulu outside of Asia, although this hasn't been confirmed yet. Fans looking to get caught up before season 2 airs can watch the entire first season on Hulu or Crunchyroll.
