Outlander star Sam Heughan is in talks to play the male lead in upcoming comedy movie The Spy Who Dumped Me. The film, from Imagine Entertainment, is being directed by Susanna Fogel (Chasing Life) who co-wrote the script alongside David Iserson. A take-off of the classic Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me, the comedy already has Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon on board to tackle the female leads.

Heughan would be playing the titular spy in the comedy, which centers on his ex-girlfriend and her best friend. The two women find themselves caught up in international intrigue after discovering her ex-boyfriend's life as a secret agent.

Heughan has not yet officially signed on for the role, but according to a new report from Deadline, the Outlander star is in talks with Lionsgate about the part. The name of the character has not yet been revealed, but filming is scheduled to start this summer, so final casting decisions and more information about the project are sure to be coming soon.

Outlander Season 2 Finale - Claire and Jamie

Heughan shot to fame in the Starz series about a time traveller who falls in love with a Scotsman in the 1700s, and it's not surprising that he is now being eyed for a leap onto the big screen. The Spy Who Dumped Me would not be the actor's first feature length film, but it would be his first time with such a big Hollywood production, rather than smaller, independent films.

His work on Outlander has certainly proven that Heughan has the chops for a romantic role - not to mention the looks for it - but should he sign on to this project it will be fantastic to see him doing a little more comedy. Outlander is packed with dramatic scenes and epic battles, but it's very different from the kind of comedy that Kunis has been doing recently with films like Bad Moms. The Spy Who Dumped Me would also be a chance for Heughan to step out of his kilt and into some modern clothes, which would no doubt be a refreshing change for the actor.

Of course, this is not yet confirmed by Lionsgate, and Heughan is still very much in the negotiations stage. His work on Outlander is set to keep him very busy for the next few years, at least, as the book series the popular show is based on is currently eight novels long and still going. However, if he could balance filming the show with this new project, it could be the perfect stepping stone to Hollywood for Heughan.

The Spy Who Dumped Me is set for release July 2018.
