SpongeBob SquarePants already has a couple of movies, but now the famous sea sponge is ready to keep expanding its adventures with a couple of spinoffs, though not all of them have him as the main character. Created by Stephen Hillenburg, SpongeBob SquarePants made its debut on Nickelodeon in 1999 and has been unstoppable ever since, becoming not only the most successful Nicktoon to date but also one of the longest-running American animated series, with over 10 seasons and counting.

SpongeBob SquarePants follows the daily adventures of the title character in the underwater city of Bikini Bottom and alongside his best friends Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks, his neighbor Squidward Tentacles, and his boss Mr. Krabs. SpongeBob’s popularity has been such that he and his friends have successfully expanded to other media, most notably film (with three movies so far) and video games, and in 20 years of underwater adventures and destruction, they haven’t expanded to spinoff shows – until now.

Although it goes against Hillenburg’s plans for SpongeBob SquarePants, as he didn’t want spinoffs nor big guest stars, Nickelodeon is now working on spinoffs focused on different characters and one that will take viewers back a couple of years to meet the main characters when they were kids, even if some details go against to main show’s continuity. Here are all three upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants spinoffs and what to expect from them.

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years

SpongeBob SquarePants prequel Kamp Koral

Kamp Koral: SpongeBob’s Under Years is a CG-animated prequel series that will give the audience a glimpse at what the characters were like many years before the events of the main series. Set at Kamp Koral, the craziest sleepaway camp in the kelp forest, the show will see 10-year-old SpongeBob taking part in many camp-like activities as are jellyfishing, building campfires, and swimming in Lake Yuckymuck, alongside Patrick and Sandy, with Squidward and Mrs. Puff serving as counselors and Mr. Krabs overseeing everything. Kamp Koral will be released on CBS All Access (soon to be Paramount+) in early 2021.

The Patrick Star Show

Patrick Star might not be the smartest citizen of Bikini Bottom, but he’s popular enough to get his own TV show. Titled The Patrick Star Show, the series is planned to have a late-night talk show style with Patrick as the host, and welcoming different guests, with other SpongeBob SquarePants characters making occasional appearances. The show was announced to be in development in August 2020, but it doesn’t have a projected release date yet.

Untitled Netflix Projects

Squidward in Spongebob Squarepants

Back in November 2019, a “music-based” spinoff focused on Squidward was reported to be in development at Netflix, but SpongeBob SquarePants executive producer Vincent Waller shared on Twitter that there was no such project, but he doesn’t rule out the possibility of a Squidward TV show at some point. In March 2020, ViacomCBS announced the production of two spinoff movies for Netflix, though details remain unknown. Given that Patrick is getting his own talk show, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Netflix projects are focused on other characters, such as Squidward and Sandy, or could even give Patrick the chance of starring in his own movie, though fans shouldn’t lose hope yet on a Squidward spinoff show.
