These SpongeBob Squarepants fan theories caught on like wildfire, but they are unfortunately not true. First debuting in 1999 on Nickelodeon, it did not take long for viewers to become hooked on SpongeBob Squarepants. Set in the underwater world of Bikini Bottom, the series has followed the adventures of SpongeBob, his best friend Patrick Star, their neighbor Squidward, as well as Mr. Krabs, Sandy Cheeks, and Plankton.
The creation of Stephen Hillenburg has gone on to become one of the network's most popular series of all-time, and with that love has come plenty of fan theories. Viewers have long been speculating on the origin of Bikini Bottom or even what Krabby Patties are made of, and they've dreamt up some elaborate possibilities in the process. Unfortunately, not all of them have turned out to be true.
In the latest Screen Rant video, we take a look at 10 theories that sounded so good, most of the fan community believed they were accurate, but they are not. The history of Bikini Bottom is no closer to being explained it appears, while fans will need to try and figure out a different meat for the Krabby Patty formula. These are just two of the theories though, so check out the video featured at the top of this post for the rest.
One of the most surprising lies, though, came straight from SpongeBob Squarepants. For years many fans believed that Squidward was indeed a squid as his name would suggest, which left them all the more surprised when it was revealed this was not the case. Squidward is actually supposed to be an octopus on the show, despite him only having six tentacles. We can only assume that Octoward wasn't as appealing of a name for Hillenburg.
As disappointed as some fans may be to know that these 10 theories or supposed facts are not true, at least the truth has finally been revealed. After all, SpongeBob Squarepants is still going strong with new episodes in its 12th season and Nickelodeon is invested in the series beyond this point, too. Their movie division is working on another new movie that hits theaters next year, while there's also been talk of possible spinoffs. The possibilities for new shows includes an origin story for SpongeBob and Patrick, a standalone Sandy adventure, or even one focused on Plankton. None of these spinoffs have officially been green lit so far, but with the brand still incredibly popular, it may just be a matter of time before SpongeBob Squarepants expands into its own universe full of content.
