Throughout SpongeBob SquarePants, it is clear that Squidward becomes annoyed with SpongeBob regularly. This is understandable, as SpongeBob can be a lot to deal with. This is especially the case for a very reserved individual like Squidward. As a result of this, Squidward often looks to spend time away from SpongeBob, but that is a hard task. The pair are neighbors and coworkers, so interactions between them are inevitable. Also, SpongeBob is completely oblivious to Squidward's desire to be alone and tries to always hang out and include Squidward in his activities. Thus, their differing personalities can create an abundance of conflict.
