An exclusive clip from The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run shows off the film's opening sequence and 3D animation. Sponge on the Run is the third feature film based on the popular Nickelodeon series. The film was initially scheduled to be released in 2019 before being pushed to summer 2020. The coronavirus pandemic forced the movie off the release calendar again, and now it will finally be getting a release on premium video on demand on March 4.

Sponge on the Run will also be available on Paramount+ when the streaming service debuts on March 4. The film is the first SpongeBob property to be made entirely in CGI, along with the integration of some live-action celebrity cameos. Sponge on the Run will follow the titular character as he searches for his snail Gary, who goes missing at the beginning of the film. Their search leads them to King Poseidon as the Bikini Bottom gang must rescue Gary from his clutches.

The clip highlights SpongeBob's relationship with Gary - the snail wakes him up in the morning by crawling over his face and leaving behind a blue snail trail. Check out the full clip below:

SpongeBob and Gary's relationship has long been a staple of the series. The pair have been together since the series' inception and have stayed together throughout its run. The plot of Sponge on the Run even centers around this relationship, and although SpongeBob has plenty of other friends like Patrick and Sandy, it's Gary who truly has SpongeBob's heart. Even if Sponge on the Run changes the story of how Gary and SpongeBob met, it's clear from the opening scene that their relationship remains unchanged.

It's also clear that Paramount+ is betting big on SpongeBob. In addition to premiering the film on the streaming service, SpongeBob will also be getting a prequel series, Kamp KoralThe show will follow SpongeBob and friends at a sleep-away camp. Paramount+ is banking on nostalgia behind much of its content, and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run and the series will be the first test to see if this pays off. The series has remained in the hearts of many for over two decades, and Paramount+ is hoping it stays there.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run will be available on premium video-on-demand and Paramount+ beginning March 4.
