The developer of free-to-play multiplayer shooter Splitgate has revealed that a Nintendo Switch release is part of the game's future plans, as is full crossplay functionality across all platforms. Splitgate is still in beta due to the game's popularity, with the team wanting to further expand and enhance the title before its full release.

Splitgate is a sci-fi shooter developed by 1047 Games, with player-controlled portals that allow for frenetic multi-dimensional combat. The game has been compared to classic shooters like Halo, as well as titles like Portal. Splitgate has more than 20 maps across a wide range of locations, including an alien crash site and a research facility found inside an active volcano. The game features over 15 casual and competitive modes, a ranking system, and a competitive leaderboard, making it one of the fullest free-to-play experiences. Splitgate has been available on Steam since 2019, and in July of this year, Splitgate launched on PS4 and Xbox One. New-gen upgrades are planned to release in the future.

The game's developers are looking to bring the action to even more players, stating in a recent Splitgate Twitch stream that they'd one day like to release the title across all platforms, including Nintendo Switch and mobile devices (via GameSpot). 1047 CEO Ian Proulx told fans: "Part of the vision is we want to be available on everything. We want to be available on mobile, Switch--I mean, everything." When asked about a potential Mac release, the developer responded: "It's not on the top of our priorities, but it's important to us that people play with their friends--and that means crossplay on everything." Unfortunately, Proulx has stated that the team hasn't yet started working on the plans.

Splitgate Jumping and Shooting

Bringing the game to Nintendo Switch, Mac, and mobile devices would allow Splitgate's player base to grow, but it could also present a multitude of problems. Free-to-play shooters such as Apex Legends have suffered on Switch, with rough-looking textures and graphics due to the console's limitations. Another problem the developer might face is balancing the game. Splitgate players on PC could see huge advantages over those playing on mobile, especially if using a keyboard and mouse, which is generally considered the most accurate way to play first-person shooters. Splitgate currently supports crossplay across all the platforms it's available on, meaning both PC and console.

Splitgate's development team isn't currently prioritizing bringing the game to more platforms, which means that there's plenty of time for any issues to be resolved. The company's interest in making Splitgate more accessible for more players is one that many fans of the game will appreciate, though it could be years before players can delve into Splitgate from a multitude of different devices and platforms, and enjoy crossplay with Nintendo Switch.
