Splitgate, a portal-based shooter that burst onto the gaming scene this past summer, has revealed some end-of-year stats, including that gamers spawned over 7 billion portals since the game’s launch. Splitgate quickly grabbed attention as a near-perfect arena shooter, leading to such mind-blowing stats. Given that portals are the main thing that sets Splitgate apart, it’s not surprising that the number would be so high, but it does speak to the game’s popularity. It may be just the breath of fresh air the arena shooter genre needed.

Since its initial early access debut in 2019, Splitgate has attained quite a large following, most of which came into being after the beta launch in July of 2021. On the heels of that success, the game has continued to grow, bringing in $100 million in funding and a $1.5 billion valuation for Splitgate. The success came so quickly that the dev team found itself overwhelmed, with the game experiencing periods of downtime as the team worked to increase server capacity and made sure that the game could handle its large influx of players. Though the game was scheduled for an official release in the summer of 2021, it is now in what the dev team calls an “indefinite beta,” with no word as to when it will officially release. Even while technically still in beta, though, Splitgate is doing well.

To celebrate Splitgate's success, developer 1047 Games has released an infographic and a press release detailing some statistics of the game over 2021. The 7 billion portal number is even more impressive when considering that that’s just in the second half of the year. Some other big numbers include 108 billion shots fired and 163 billion meters traveled through portals (or, as the press release compares, “like going to Mars from the Earth. Three times.” Splitgate is clearly earning its place on some “best FPS of 2021” lists, with a large number of gamers playing the game quite a bit.

There are even more stats in the infographic, a mix of fun number tallies and milestones. Splitgate was apparently the top trending free-to-play game on Steam, Xbox, and Playstation, as well as achieving over 15 million downloads just in 2021. This success was helped by the game’s release on consoles, with both cross-gen and cross-play support to merge the game’s different communities. The infographic even gets so granular as to tally the total number of shots fired and kills achieved, both with portals and without. Those numbers are similarly large, so it’s clear that Splitgate is seeing plenty of playtime.

Flush with Splitgate’s success, 1047 Games continues to work on improving the game. The dev team cheekily bragged about having a Forge mode before Halo Infinite, which confirms that big things are in the works for the game. Maybe those already-high numbers will be even higher come next year’s infographic. With the milestones the game’s already achieved, that seems likely.
