Ubisoft has confirmed that Splinter Cell is finally making a comeback in the form of a remake, and it won't be an open-world title. Ubisoft surprised gamers by having a surprise announcement for the new Splinter Cell ready to go along with some surface-level details. Although there's still a lot of unknowns and it sounds like it's in the very early stages of development, it's finally happening after eight years of waiting.

There has been a lot of demand for a new Splinter Cell, even from Ubisoft employees, but the developer has been sitting idly on the IP for almost a decade. There is a VR game and a Netflix series in the works, but fans have been demanding a proper new Splinter Cell experience since the release of Blacklist. The game was received well by fans and critics alike, but failed to make a splash commercially, due in part to the fact that it was released around Saints Row 4 and Grand Theft Auto 5.

Instead of continuing from where Blacklist left off, Ubisoft has confirmed it's going back to its roots and doing a remake of Splinter Cell. It was very clear to note this isn't a remaster and despite rumors, Splinter Cell won't be going open-world. It doesn't sound like Ubisoft plans to stop with this remake, either. It sounds like it's a gateway for sequels, as creative director Chris Auty noted the remake will build "a solid base for the future of Splinter Cell." As for the release date, it hasn't been given, but it's likely still several years away, since the game appears to be in early development.

While it may not be a brand-new game, the remake will hopefully still take advantage of modern technology on current-gen systems. It's a great starting point to reel Splinter Cell back in to its roots and find the foundation. The series has evolved into a variety of different shapes over the years, so it's going to be interesting to see what sticks and what gets thrown to the side. Nonetheless, it's good to see the project finally confirmed after all these years of Splinter Cell rumors.

It's currently unclear whether legendary actor Michael Ironside will return as Sam Fisher. The actor wasn't in Splinter Cell: Blacklist, but returned to cameo in other Ubisoft games like Ghost Recon. As of right now, it sounds like Ubisoft has plans for a larger future for Splinter Cell, but it'll likely be quite a while before fans get to see it materialize.
