Spider-Verse star Hailee Steinfeld doesn't know if the Spider-Gwen spinoff movie is still happening. Sony's enjoyed a good deal of critical success with its Spider-Man films over the years, but none more so than with 2018's animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Even before the film opened in theaters, the studio realized it had something special and gave the go-ahead to both a sequel and a spinoff. The latter of those project will revolve around various female web-slingers, including Hailee Steinfeld's Spider-Gwen (following her introduction in the first Spider-Verse movie).

Since then, producer Amy Pascal has confirmed the female Spider-Verse spinoff will include (at least) Cindy Moon aka. Silk and Jessica Drew aka. Spider-Woman, in addition to Gwen Stacy. It's also been reported animation veteran Lauren Montgomery (Voltron, Batman: Year One) is set to direct the film, with Bek Smith (who did production rewrites on Captain Marvel) writing the script. However, there haven't been any major updates for some time, and even Steinfeld's in the dark about the project's current status.

During a recent interview, ET asked Steinfeld if the Spider-Gwen spinoff is still moving forward, to which she replied "Not that I know of, I am not in the know with these things." She went on to say "It's funny, because I feel like this is the time to figure it out," in reference to Hollywood being on shutdown because of the coronavirus pandemic, before adding "But I do think, obviously, everything has kind of been slightly put on hold. So there hasn't been much that I've heard lately."

The pandemic isn't the only factor that could be responsible for the lack of recent updates on the Spider-Gwen spinoff. Animated films take a long time to develop and it hasn't even been two years since the first Spider-Verse movie came out. With Sony moving full-speed ahead on Spider-Verse 2 for a 2022 release, it's likely the female spinoff's a lower priority right now. It's also possible the Spider-Verse sequel directly sets up the Spider-Gwen spinoff, which is why the former is happening first. Phil Lord, who co-wrote and produced the original Spider-Verse movie, previously teased the sequel features some big surprises, so that may include a quick introduction to characters like Silk and Spider-Woman ahead of their team-up adventure with Gwen.

In the meantime, Sony's keeping busy developing several women-led Spider-Man projects on the live-action side of the Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters. That includes what's reportedly a Madame Web movie directed by S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones, The Defenders), in addition to the Jackpot film being written by Arrowverse co-creator Marc Guggenheim. Even Gina Prince-Bythewood's cancelled Silver Sable and Black Cat team-up movie, Silver & Black, hasn't been completely abandoned and could supposedly transform into a Disney+ TV show. Hopefully, it's not the only female superhero crossover in play and the Spider-Gwen spinoff will eventually see the light of day.
