Sony released its first trailer for Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Part One), and it includes an Easter egg to another recent animated movie—The Mitchells vs. The Machines. The new trailer gives viewers their first look at the sequel to the critically acclaimed film, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which premiered in 2018. Set to release in 2022, Spider-Verse 2 will continue to follow Miles Morales (Spider-Man) and Gwen Stacy as they travel through the multiverse with a new team of spider-themed heroes to fight a powerful enemy.

While not a typical superhero movie, The Mitchells vs. The Machines still centered on a family of unlikely heroes working together to save the world. The animated feature told the story of a dysfunctional family that had to learn to get along and celebrate each other’s differences when their family road trip was interrupted by the robot apocalypse. Although The Mitchells vs. The Machines was originally scheduled to premiere in theaters in January 2020, it became available for streaming on Netflix in April 2021 instead due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Widely popular, The Mitchells vs. The Machines soon became Netflix’s most-watched animated film.

Primarily featuring two clips from the movie, the Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Part One) trailer starts where Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse ended—with a portal opening in Miles’ bedroom as he listens to music. This time though, viewers get to see Gwen go through the portal and begin looking around Miles’ room. As she does, viewers may notice a wooden moose sitting on a shelf among Miles’ other childhood toys. This moose is pulled directly from The Mitchells vs. The Machines, making it an Easter egg that holds importance for not only the stories, but the creators of both animated movies.

Spider-Verse 2 Gwen Stacy with Mitchells' Moose

In The Mitchells vs. The Machines, the moose was significant because it was a gift to Katie Mitchell, the movie’s protagonist, from her father, Rick Mitchell. The moose acted as a symbol for the relationship between the two characters since Rick not only gave up his dream of living in a cabin in the forest to raise Katie in a more suitable environment, but he later gave Katie the moose, which was his only memento from the cabin. Both of these acts symbolized him putting his family first.

Similarly, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse included themes about family, building the relationships between Miles and both his uncle and father. In Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Mitchells vs. The Machines, characters learned to believe in not only themselves, but their loved ones. In this way, the Easter egg of the wooden moose connects the two franchises and hints that family and relationships might be important themes in Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Part One) as well.

Another reason for including the Easter egg involves two of the creators behind the movies. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller produced both The Mitchells vs. The Machines and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and will continue to perform these roles for Spider-Verse 2. In addition, while Lord already co-wrote the first Spider-Verse movie, both contributed to writing Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Part One). Due to this, the wooden moose Easter egg serves as a way to link their different projects, both in and out of the growing Spider-Verse, together.
