Sony has released a new trailer for Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (Part One), featuring a new spider variant known as Spider-Man 2099. Following the Oscar-winning Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, which revealed the origin story of Miles Morales as he was thrust into a greater multiverse of Spider heroes, it's no surprise that the popular film is getting a sequel. Furthermore, it looks as though Miguel O'Hara will have a larger role to play following his brief and mysterious appearance in the first film's post-credits scene as Spider-Man 2099.

While Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) fought to get his new Spider allies home to their respective realities in the first film, it seems as though there will be a new adventure on the horizon with the return of Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld). Visiting Miles in his room in the new trailer for Into the Spider-Verse 2, it looks as though Gwen is looking to reconnect while also needing his help with some new multiversal problem (despite Miles apparently being grounded).

Miles' Spider-Man is soon flying through the multiverse, leaving his own reality for the first time in this new trailer (though he's not alone for long). Brooklyn's Spider-Man is surprisingly attacked by a different Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099, the new Spider variant whose goals remain unknown as they battle while simultaneously potentially falling through what appears to be a different world. Here's an explainer for Spider-Man 2099, his powers and abilities, and what his role might be in the upcoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One).

Spider-Man 2099 Powers & Abilities Explained

In Marvel comics, Miguel O'Hara, a.k.a Spider-Man 2099, was created in 1992 by Peter David and Rick Leonardi. Depicted as the Spider-Man of Tomorrow, this variant who will soon debut in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 lives in a reality set in the future year of 2099. Protecting the city of Nueva York, Miguel works to fight against the corrupt corporation known as Alchemax as it continues to gain more and more influence over the city. However, Alechemax is where Miguel got his powers when his genes were forcibly merged with a spider's DNA, making him 50% spider.

Growing talons on his feet and hands, Miguel is able to stick and climbs walls just like a spider would. He also grew larger talons on his forearms as well. Furthermore, Spider-Man 2099's webs are organic and shoot out of his wrists, not unlike Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man from the Sam Raimi directed trilogy. He also has fangs that allow him to paralyze his foes with a non-lethal venom.

Recent years have seen Miguel O'Hara's Spider-Man 2099 becoming a major player in Marvel's Spider-Verse comics events as well as becoming a hero of the modern era of the Marvel Universe known as the Heroic Age. As such, it makes sense that he's being set up to have a significant role in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verseperhaps becoming a primary Spider-Man variant helping Miles Morales navigate the multiverse of various realities and other Spider heroes they may encounter, going beyond the ones Miles teamed up with in the first Spider-Verse film.

Oscar Isaac Will Return As The Voice Of Spider-Man 2099

Spider-Verse-2099-Post-Credits

While Spider-Man 2099 made a brief appearance in 2018's Into The Spider-Verse, there wasn't much that was revealed about him other than the fact that he'd gained the ability to autonomously jump through the multiverse. This was thanks to the efforts of Lyla, his holographic personal assistant voiced by Greta Lee. Meanwhile, Spider-Man 2099 was voiced by Oscar Isaac.

It was confirmed that Isaac will be reprising his role as Miguel in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which will certainly be interesting as Spider-Man 2099's origins will likely be revealed in the upcoming film. While the post-credits scene in the first movie was an exciting confirmation of Miguel's existence in the multiverse, it would be nice to see more of such a dynamic Spider-Man. While hilarious, the final scene simply saw Spider-Man 2099 jumping to the Earth of the 1967 Spider-Man cartoon, arguing with that world's Spider-Man as they recreated the ever-popular "Spider-Man Pointing" internet meme.

Spider-Verse 2: Why Is Spider-Man 2099 Attacking Miles Morales?

Spider-Verse-Across-2099-Miles-Morales

One of the most interesting moments of the new Spider-Verse 2 trailer isn't just that Miles is venturing beyond his own reality, but that he's quickly attacked by Spider-Man 2099. Why would Miguel have a rivalry with Miles to begin with? Perhaps they will meet each other earlier in the sequel prior to this brawl and tension already created. It's also possible that Miguel's knowledge of the future could see him attempting to prevent Miles Morales' Spider-Man from doing something he's yet to do which could have unintended yet disastrous consequences. However, it's very likely that Alchemax will serve as the common thread.

Not only is the future Alchemax incredibly corrupt while also being responsible for Miguel's powers in the comics, but Into the Spider-Verse's version of Miles was bitten by a spider that originated from the corporation as well. Likewise, the present Alechemax was the company that had Oliva Octavius employed as their head scientist who was working with the Kingpin to create the Super Collider as a means to bring his family back from another universe. As a result, Miles and Miguel have a lot in common though it could also be what motivates them to be at odds in the upcoming Spider-Verse sequel.

In any case, it's going to be interesting to see what's in store for Miguel O'Hara's Spider-Man 2099, both in Spider-Verse 2 as well as the reported third Spider-Verse film, serving as Across the Spider-Verse's second chapter. Having Oscar Isaac joining the sequels in what looks to be a primary role will certainly be exciting as the greater multiverse is explored. It's also likely that Miles will be reunited with the Spider friends he made in the first Spider-Verse film such as Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, Peter B. Parker, and more. Regardless, Spider-Man 2099 is one of the most beloved Spider variants in Marvel comics, so here's hoping he gets the debut he deserves when Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) releases.
