Tom Holland is being unusually secretive regarding his Spider-Man future after Spider-Man: No Way Home, but this isn’t really a spoiler as far as the web-slinger’s fate. No Way Home will be the culmination of Holland’s Spider-Man MCU solo films, tying them to the two previous Spider-Man film franchises as well. Villains from the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb films are confirmed to appear in No Way Home, but Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield have long been rumored to be appearing in the film, but Tom Holland’s Spider-Man future seems to be somewhat unclear.

The film rights to Spider-Man have belonged to Sony Pictures since the web-slinger’s first cinematic outing in 2002. Although the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb Spider-Man film franchises each came frustratingly close to becoming canon to the MCU at different points (Raimi in 2008 and Webb in 2012), Spider-Man didn’t formally join the pop culture-dominating MCU until 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, in which Tom Holland joined as a third iteration of the beloved hero following an agreement between Sony and Marvel Studios.

Holland has recently expressed sadness over the uncertainty of his future as the MCU’s Spider-Man. Most of the hype surrounding No Way Home is speculation over what the multiverse-based plot will entail and how the Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield iterations of Spider-Man could factor into the films. Yet, Holland has remained unusually tight-lipped regarding both the film and his future. While No Way Home is sure to feature all kinds of surprises that even the most observant fans hadn’t considered, one need not worry about Holland’s future as Spider-Man. He is, after all, playing the most popular Marvel superhero in a franchise that has dominated the film industry for nearly a decade.

No Way Home will take Spider-Man into uncharted territory, as far as live-action films go. While the Spider-Man comics and the critically-acclaimed animated movie, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse have explored the various alternate universe versions of the web-slinger, No Way Home will do so while connecting three beloved film franchises. Most fans are concerned with when Maguire and Garfield’s respective versions of Spider-Man will show up (and how much of an effect they’ll have on the plot), but not a lot of attention is being paid to how the movie will end for Holland’s iteration. With the multiverse damaged, this could mean any number of things for the MCU’s web-slinger.

In the process of repairing the multiverse, perhaps Tom’s Spider-Man is forced to leave his home reality, removing him from future MCU appearances. This would set Tom’s iteration up for multiverse adventures, which could include Sony’s upcoming Sinister Six movie. Unfortunately, Holland’s contract for Spider-Man solo movies ends after No Way Home, so the situation might seem precarious to some.

Given the outcry of Tom Holland’s Spider-Man franchise seemingly coming to an abrupt end following his second solo outing, it seems highly unlikely that Marvel Studious will simply let him go after No Way Home. Spider-Man is easily one of Marvel’s most marketable heroes, in addition to their most famous, and Holland’s specific version of the web-slinger is beloved by viewers, so it’s doubtful that Marvel Studios will let him go so easily. Even if Holland’s Spider-Man ends up leaving the MCU continuity, his contract still has him for another crossover movie. Even if Tom Holland’s Spider-Man no longer shows up in MCU solo films, his hints towards an uncertain future aren’t spoiling anything.
