Tom Holland reveals he was drunk during a phone call that helped keep Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In late September, a deal was reached to end the standoff between Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios regarding one of the most popular comic book characters of all time. As part of the agreement, Sony and Marvel would continue their partnership on a third installment of Spider-Man. Also, as part of the deal, Holland’s version of Spider-Man would appear in one more MCU movie. The news was met positively by many fans, who worried about whether the Webbed Wonder might be rebooted on the big screen yet again. Others felt it would be narratively confusing to cut Peter Parker out of the story, given how he was being positioned as the new flagship hero of the shared universe in the wake of Tony Stark’s death.

Holland felt the same, expressing his own feeling of relief with a memorable Instagram post. It soon turned out, however, that the star of Spider-Man: Far From Home was not content to simply watch and worry from the sidelines. Reports emerged that detailed how Holland made multiple appeals to Disney’s CEO and chairman Bob Iger, as well as the chairman of Sony film Tom Rothman, in order to keep Peter Parker in the same movie universe as Iron Man and others. Iger, speaking to Jimmy Kimmel, shed some light on one of those efforts. In a new interview, Holland talks about what he remembers from a phone call with Iger. As the actor readily acknowledges, it didn’t happen under the most ideal of circumstances.

As part of a wide-ranging chat on Jimmy Kimmel Live, in which Holland promoted Onward and Cherry, the host couldn’t resist asking about the phone call with Disney’s CEO. With a smile, Holland recalls that he was a few drinks in and with not much food in his system. But, after some encouragement from his dad, he took the call. Holland was eager to thank Iger for the opportunity to play Spider-Man, but Disney’s chairman wasn’t quite ready to turn the page just yet. He inquired with Holland about the possibility of continuing Marvel’s cooperation with Sony.

Although he acknowledged the strangeness of Iger and Rothman listening to his point of view, given their stature, Holland says that he was grateful they did. Even in the brief remarks, Holland straddles the line between the two studios. He maintained the Spider-Man franchise would have been safe with Sony, had an agreement not been reached, while being adamant that his character belonged in the MCU.

Overall, despite the comical conditions of the call, it went by without any stumbles. Except for, perhaps, one amusing detail. Holland was asked by Kimmel to confirm Iger’s claim that the actor was weepy during the call. Holland conceded that he might have been, given how emotional he was about Spider-Man leaving the MCU. The fact that he was pretty drunk probably didn’t help his emotional state, either.
