Spider-Man: Far From Home is the latest movie to get the deepfake treatment, with one fan swapping Tom Holland out for original Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire in a new video. Spider-Man has been adapted for film many times over the years, with Maguire first taking on the role in 2002's Spider-Man. He continued playing the hero for two more movies: 2004's Spider-Man 2 and 2007's Spider-Man 3. Following Maguire's run, Andrew Garfield took over the role for The Amazing Spider-Man series. However, the two films made with him as star received mixed reviews.

Holland came on board for a new take on the character in 2016. His version of Spider-Man debuted in Captain America: Civil War, before going on to star in Spider-Man: Homecoming. He also played a big role in Avengers: Infinity War, with many considering his death to be one of the movie's saddest moments. Like many other MCU characters, Holland made his triumphant return a year later in Avengers: Endgame. He then starred in Spider-Man: Far From Home earlier this summer.

Youtuber Aldo Jones shared the video with Maguire replacing Holland as Spider-Man online yesterday. It features deepfaked versions of two different Spider-Man: Far From Home trailers. Scary as it sounds, Maguire is seamlessly subbed in for Holland in the video, to the point where it's hard to remember what the original trailers looked like. Deepfaked videos have become increasingly popular online in the last few years. However, their use outside of entertainment purposes is potentially troubling. Check out the deepfaked trailer below:

Jones' trailer comes as Spider-Man's future in the MCU is uncertain. Though Sony has the rights to the character, the studio reached a landmark deal with Marvel several years ago to lend him out. This allowed Spider-Man to appear in Marvel films, with Sony holding onto distribution rights for his standalone movies. However, as was revealed earlier this month, the two studios are having trouble reaching an agreement to extend the deal. This means that although Holland will continue playing Spider-Man for the time being, he may not appear in any more MCU films.

Though fans love Holland's take on the character, it's interesting to see what the current Spider-Man movies would look like with Maguire. Like Holland's, many fans loved Maguire's take on the character. If his films had flopped, it's unlikely that we would have seen Garfield or Holland take up the mantle. Though it's unlikely that Maguire will play Spider-Man again, fans can use this Spider-Man: Far From Home trailer to imagine what it would be like if he did.
