Sony's plans for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 are already being revealed with the focus set to be on the budding romance between Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy. The studio is just now releasing Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse in theaters. While the box office performance has yet to be determined, the reactions and reviews have been extremely high.

This response is why Sony is already moving to expand the Spider-Verse franchise with a sequel and spin-off, which are already in the works and will see the universe will grow very quickly. However, the focus of the main franchise will not stray too far from its lead character of Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore). The first movie shows Miles' origin story as his Earth's Spider-Man, while trying to restore the multiverse. This allowed other Spider-People to interact with Miles as mentors and friends. The latter is where Gwen Stacy (voiced by Hailee Steinfeld) fits in, but that relationship will grow in the sequel.

Vanity Fair spoke to producer Amy Pascal about Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 and she revealed some additional details on the movie. She confirmed the previously reported news that Joaquim Dos Santos will direct the sequel based on a script from David Callaham. The story will be focused on the romantic relationship between Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy, which is a thread from executive producer and co-writer Phil Lord's original script for the first movie.

Spider-Gwen Miles Morales Kiss

While Gwen is largely associated with being one of Peter Parker's many love interests over the years, a romantic spark has been seen between Gwen and Miles recently in Marvel Comics. The recent Marvel NOW! series built up the romance between the two Spider-People from different Earths, with their affection on full display for the cover of Spider-Man #12.

If this thread is going to be pulled on and expanded in the Spider-Verse sequel, it should signal more dimension hopping for the heroes. Since Gwen was taken out of her reality and into Miles', it could be fun to see Miles be the one to visit a different Earth next time. Making the romance the focus of the sequel also will help differentiate it from the first film, as there's only a few very minor romantic subplots to the movie. Spider-Verse may be pleasing audiences of all ages, but the animated movie is still targeting a young demographic first and foremost. A teenage love story should be the right next step for the series and it guarantees Miles and Gwen should share the screen throughout Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.
