Rian Johnson has jumped on the bandwagon, becoming the latest in a long line to heap praise on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Co-written by Phil Lord and Rodney Rothman, the film marks the big-screen debut of Miles Morales. People have been eager to see the character brought to life since he made his first comic book appearance in 2011. Although it isn't the live-action introduction fans once campaigned for, - or was teasingly set-up in Spider-Man: Homecoming - it's proving to have been very much worth the wait. Offering a "spectacular origin story" for Miles Morales. Into the Spider-Verse has thus far earned over $200 million at the box office and a Golden Globe win.

Johnson, meanwhile, is responsible for such cult favorites as Brick and Looper. He also directed some of the best episodes of Breaking Bad. Most notably, however, the filmmaker served as both writer and director for the latest installment of the Star Wars saga - The Last Jedi. The film proved extremely divisive, sparking numerous debates, with it considered equally the best and worst of the entire franchise. Regardless of the reaction, Johnson has remained positive, recently thanking fans and critics alike on the film's anniversary.

Johnson took to his personal Twitter account in order to pay that positivity forward. Posting immediately after viewing the film, the writer/director announced that "he had seen the light". He didn't go into specifics as to what about the movie he liked in particular, except to call it "next level stuff" and state that it might just be "his new favorite superhero movie." He then went on, in a follow-up tweet, to emphasize just how big an influence the movie could ultimately be, going as far as to label it the "Velvet Underground of superhero movies". Lord not only helped to craft the story but also served as a producer alongside frequent collaborator, Christopher Miller. Both were unceremoniously fired from Solo: A Star Wars Story in mid-2017. With Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse, however, they have more than bounced back. The animated film will now join The LEGO Movie and 21 Jump Street in their catalogue of critical and commercial hits. Remaining ever tongue-in-cheek, Lord was quick to reply to Johnson, declaring him to be "ridiculous...Ly nice!!!!" Johnson isn't the first celebrity to offer Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse their seal of approval. Such as Kevin Smith and Patton Oswalt have also contributed to the positive response. The public has been equally vocal, with many celebrating the stunning visuals, pitch-perfect performances, and blend of heart and humor.

Sony will no doubt be pleased to see this latest nugget of validation, however. Although the film is still in theaters, they are already looking to the future. Riding on the wave of success that the film has already experienced, there are already a variety of sequels and spin-offs in the works.  Not only will there be further adventures for Miles Morales, but also an all-female spider-hero team-up led by Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld).

Sony is even reportedly considering small-screen spin-offs, which could potentially follow such fan-favorites as Spider-Ham. Whether or not all of that comes to fruition - or enjoys similar success - remains to be seen. For the time being, however, Johnson's comments just serve as further proof that, with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-VerseSony is definitely back on the right track.
