Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse gets the Honest Trailers treatment in a new video. 2018 was a major year for Spider-Man on the big screen, between Peter Parker's heart-wrenching "death" during Avengers: Infinity War and Venom becoming a monster-sized box office hit. However, the web-head's crowning achievement was almost certainly Sony's Into the Spider-Verse. The animated superhero adventure was pretty much universally beloved, with critics and general audiences showering acclaim on its gorgeously stylized animation, clever meta-humor, and emotionally resonant superhero origin story for Miles Morales (from the Ultimate Spider-Man comic book universe).

Into the Spider-Verse ultimately went on to win the Best Animated Feature Oscar at this year's Academy Awards ceremony, while also quadrupling its $90 million budget at the box office. Indeed, whichever way you cut it, it's hard to see the animated Spider-Man adventure as anything but a runaway success for Sony Animation and the web-slinger's brand at large. Even Screen Junkies has a hard time finding flaws with the film in their new Honest Trailer (Sony's egregious product placement aside).

In lieu of a typical Honest Trailer, the Spider-Verse video features guest star appearances by Felicia Day (The Guild, Supernatural), Critical Role's Matt Mercer, comedian Vanessa Gritton (a Screen Junkies veteran), and YouTuber Mr. Sunday Movies as Epic Voiceover Narrators from other dimensions in the, er, Honest Trailers-verse. Since there's not a whole lot to nit-pick in the actual film, the Spider-Verse Honest Trailer instead takes aim at Sony's struggles with the Spider-Man franchise at large over the years. While the studio has a firm grip on the web-slinger's universe now, they almost ran the Spider-Man franchise into their ground when they tried to launch an Amazing Spider-Man universe (one that, yes, could've featured an Aunt May movie) in 2014. Of course, Sony's Spidey troubles started well before then, going back to their creative differences with Sam Raimi on Spider-Man 3 and their subsequent decision to scrap Spider-Man 4, in favor of rebooting the overall series just ten years after Raimi's first Spider-Man film hit theaters.

Jump to the present and things are a whole lot different. Sony and Marvel Studio's Spider-Man: Far From Home is expected to be one of this summer's biggest box office hits, and should pave the way for a third MCU Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland as Peter Parker. Sony's also working on a Venom sequel and, of all things, a Morbius the Living Vampire solo film as part of their Spider-Man antihero universe. And if that wasn't enough, they're even moving full-speed ahead on both a Spider-Verse sequel and a spinoff featuring female superheroes like Spider-Gwen, Silk, and Spider-Woman. Suffice it to say, it's a Spider-World right now, and we're all just living in it.
