Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2 teases the 2022 return of Spider-Man 2099. In 2018, Sony's growing Spider-Man universe dipped into animation and released Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The film centers on Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) after he gets bitten by a radioactive spider and, through a series of multiverse-bending mishaps, comes across others with the same abilities as him. Into the Spider-Verse was a huge success, garnering extremely positive reviews and leading to the creation of a sequel. A spin-off was also put into development, though star Hailee Steinfeld expressed doubt about that happening last summer.
Into the Spider-Verse 2 is currently scheduled for release in October 2022. Production kicked off in June, and aside from some teases about which Spider-Characters could pop up, most details about Into the Spider-Verse 2 are being kept secret. Specifically, plot and casting information are still unknown, though it's certain Miles will return. The real question is whether the other characters who joined him in the first one, such as Peter B. Parker (Jake Johnson) and Gwen Stacey (Steinfeld) will be back for encores. And they're not the only ones who might be back.
On New Year's Day, the official Into the Spider-Verse social media account seemingly teased the return of Spider-Man 2099 by posting pictures of the hero. The caption on the post read, "One year closer to 2022," directly referring to the arrival of the sequel. The allusion to Into the Spider-Verse 2, as well as the images of Spider-Man 2099, could mean he'll be back.
The post-credits scene of Into the Spider-Verse introduced fans to Miguel O'Hara, aka Spider-Man 2099. Miguel comes from the future, where superheroes don't exist anymore and megacorporations reign supreme. Into the Spider-Verse's post-credits scene had Oscar Isaac voice Miguel and teased his arrival in the movie's sequel, as he has a device that allows him to jump between dimensions. Spider-Man 2099 hasn't officially been confirmed for Into the Spider-Verse 2, but it's likely he'll appear.
Between Spider-Man 2099, Silk, and Japanese Spider-Man, there have been a lot of hints and rumors about the new characters who could be included in Into the Spider-Verse 2. Spider-Man 2099 seems like the most likely addition since he was included in the post-credits scene and has Isaac voicing him, but the teases for the other characters came from the Into the Spider-Verse 2 producers directly, meaning everyone stands a chance of joining the flick. Though there's still a lengthy wait between now and Into the Spider-Verse 2, at least it's getting closer by the day. After all, as the above post reminds fans, it's now one year closer to 2022.
