Warning: contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #87!

Marvel's Spider-Man has officially forgot the most important Spider-Man quote in the character's history - but it may not be his fault. The famous saying "With great power comes great responsibility" has found its way into numerous Spider-Man media, including comics, films, and video games, and even non-comic book readers are familiar with the adage. But in Amazing Spider-Man #87, Spider-Man has quite literally forgotten how to finish the quote.

While Peter Parker is recovering from a deadly radiation-based attack courtesy of the U-Foes, Peter's clone Ben Reilly takes over as New York's new Spider-Man. Employed by the Beyond Corporation, Ben has access to a new, high-tech suit with enhanced armor and radiation shielding, along with built-in microphones and bio-monitors to better communicate with and monitor Ben's status during fights. But Beyond exacts perhaps too much control over Ben, and he realizes as much during a debriefing.

After being sent into battle against Otto Octavius, Doctor Octopus reveals that Ben was chosen to be Beyond's test subject because he's easy to manipulate. During a debriefing, Ben's superiors induce a "memory cascade", practically "resetting" Ben's mind (without actually removing the memories or leaving him a blank slate). Even though he's told precious few he's a clone, the Beyond staff knows. During a medical session, Ben is prompted by the nurse to finish the famous Spider-Man quote - but he can't remember the rest. "I don't get it. With great power there must also come what?"

Note that the nurse has repeated to Ben Reilly the original quote, not the oft-used variation from the 2002 Spider-Man film directed by Sam Raimi. Furthermore, while the character Uncle Ben never said the quote in the original Spider-Man continuity (it was instead only mentioned in the final narration box in Amazing Fantasy #15), it has been attributed to him via some careful Marvel retcons. Regarding Ben forgetting the quote, this doesn't bode well; Ben is a perfect clone of Peter Parker, and as such holds all the memories of the original, including Gwen Stacy's death, his relationship with Mary Jane, and the murder of his Uncle.

Beyond's machinations are truly sinister if they've forced Ben Reilly - inadvertently or otherwise - to forget his most important lesson. With the original Peter Parker on the mend, it's entirely possible he could teach Ben the quote again. But if not, it's unfortunate that Spider-Man has forgotten the second - and perhaps most important - half of the famous saying.
